Word 2019 only displays first page when opening a document

Hi all,

All of a sudden, Word 2019 opens and only displays the first page of any document, when there are perhaps 4-5 pages in that document. I've scoured the net and tried everything but the program has stopped behaving correctly. Some documents are all right but the vast majority won't display all the pages!! The only way to get the other pages to display is by either turning my format markers on, zooming, or going to View > Multiple Pages. Then the other pages appear.

I've tried going to Control Panel > Change > Quick and Online Repair. Nothing.

The only thing I did different today was to try and have Office 2019 convert an old .pps file to the newer format. It failed of course.

I've received recent Office updates that changed the entire appearance of Excel and now it's back to its original view. What is going wrong??? Is MS messing with this AGAIN??

Thanks.

I was able to open your sample document as well (two pages).

Do post back if this issue re-surfaces.

Are you able to share one of those damaged documents with the forum?

You will have to upload the document to Dropbox or OneDrive (for example) and post a share link here.

I'd like to upload the document but I don't see how. There's no tool for that. This is all I see.

    Hi Stefan,

Thanks for chiming in. I've read several of your replies on this forum and you're a tremendous asset!

These documents are downloaded from a college site where I teach. For now, I think it's only those documents that are exhibiting this strange behavior. I'll check other documents on my computer to see if they are affected. Because they are student assignments, I can't share them :(.

If the documents are corrupt, is it possible they're being affected by the college software? To me, that seems likely. The software is Blackboard and when a student submits a document, they load it directly to Blackboard, and then I download it for grading. Further thoughts?

    Thanks and stay well...Lee

    Edit

I checked some of my earlier course assignment submissions and those assignments display fine. I'm starting to lean towards a problem with the Blackboard software and how it parses (or corrupts) the uploaded Word docs from my students.

    Another edit

I just opened another document that was created 2 months ago and was never uploaded to the course site. I had to turn on the format markers to get it to display. I can share this document. Something is really wrong with my Word version despite repair efforts!!

What's interesting is the document was saved as a .docx file and yet the title at the top shows Compatibility Mode. What the heck is that??

Here's a screen shot of how this document looks when I open it from FreeCommander. (I use it instead of Explorer).
