Hello. I have been trying unsuccessfully to upload / insert / import my .one files from an old PC to my new mac but have been unsuccessful. I have used the importer and have uploaded the .one files to One Drive but when I use 'insert' from One Note I am met with two options:

I go under the Insert tab of OneNote (pic below) Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 1.01.59 PM.pngIve tried it both ways ...  - 1. Upload to OneDrive - but this doesn't allow me to open it. A link is inserted but it just takes me to OneDrive (pic below). Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 1.05.59 PM.png

he file can't be previewed (pic below)

Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 12.59.07 PM.pngand when I click further it takes me seemingly to OneNote (pic below):Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 1.12.29 PM.pngbut when I click on that it just goes back to the OneDrive uploads page:Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 1.05.59 PM.png

When I insert as an attachment I get this message:        It says OneNote can not open files of this type? - The type is .one files.  Is that a problem for the Mac that I am using??

Hi David,

Thank you for posting your query in our community.

Per your description, you are trying to open .one file from OneNote for Mac.

Currently, OneNote for Mac can only open files stored on the Online, and does not support opening .one and .onepkg files, which is a limitation of OneNote for Mac. Therefore, the exported OneNote notes .one and .onepkg files can only be opened in OneNote 2016 on the PC side.

Since you have .one files on your old PC, we assume that you have OneNote 2016 on your device, given this situation, we'd suggest that you could directly open these .one file from OneNote 2016 on your old PC and then create a new notebook in your account, move or copy these sections to this new notebook. Here are the steps:

  1. Login to OneNote 2016 with your account, and then create a new notebook with this account.
  2. You can directly double-click these .one files, and they will be opened from OneNote 2016 automatically.

Then these sections will show under Open Sections part.

  1. Then right-click a section, and click Move and select to the new notebook you created. An article for your reference: Move or copy notes between notebooks and sections (microsoft.com)
  2. Now you can go OneDrive Online/OneNote Online to see if these sections have been synced successfully.

Best regards,

Jazlyn

Truthfully, I don't know what site I used to download the OneNote files from my old PC. The issue is I no longer have the PC. The only files I have are the .one files. It seems that these can't be accessed unless I had exported them as a zip file? i.e. .one files are useless? Please tell me otherwise. Although, I am working on a Mac, I have access to a PC if getting OneNote 365 to read my .one files would be easier on the PC. Thanks.

    Dave.

Did you use this "importer" https://www.onenote.com/notebooks/exportimport?toImport=true&auth=1&fromAR=1

    from this page https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/export-and-import-onenote-notebooks-a4b60da5-8f33-464e-b1ba-b95ce540f309 ?

This tool should not literally import a .one file, it should convert one or more .one files within a folder to a single notebook (without any visible file type).
