Checkmark Symbol in Excel

When I use the keyboard shortcut in Excel to create a checkmark I do not get the expected result. The code is suppose to be Alt + 0252. Instead of getting the checkmark I get "ü". I am using Microsoft 365, Windows 10 and the numerical keypad (not the numbers above the letters). I have tried creating a shortcut key, but the Assign button is greyed out. Any ideas as to why the ü and not the checkmark?

Change the font of the cell to Wingdings.
