Caption Cross-reference issue : missing captions in list

Hi,

I am struggling with an issue for several days now. The solutions I looked up on Internet did not yield any result, so I am posting to the community hoping for an answer. I am French and so is the GUI of my MS Word. I am writing a thesis and I have an issue with the creation of cross-reference to some of my captions.

The Issue:

The caption list in the Cross-reference dialog is missing some captions.

You can see in the screen capture that figure 38, 39, 42, 43, ... are missing in the list.

Facts:

  • The missing captions do exist in the document;
  • All captions field code is : { SEQ Figure \ ARABIC }*
  • The table of figures is complete;
  • All the missing captions are floating captions;
  • The style of the missing captions is the same as the working captions;
  • I insert captions using the contextual menu or the insert caption in the ribbon;
  • I do not have track changes feature enabled, to make sure I have accepted all changes and stopped track changes;
  • I have removed all comments from the document;
  • I have created a new word document and tried to reproduce the issue and did not, I fear my 90+ pages thesis became a corrupted word document;
  • I can insert a new caption and create a cross-reference link to it;
  • I can reproduce the issue by creating a caption on a floating image in my document, i.e. an image with floating wrapping style.

Hypothesis:

  • The issue in my document might be caused by captions on images with floating wrapping style

Any help would be highly appreciated.
Regards,

Phil

    Hi,

    I found out that all captions are present in the list but not ordered like you would expect.

    MS Word show in the caption list all the in-line caption and then the floating captions...

    At first I fail to see this.

    My thanks to Charles and Stefan for the help.

    Regards,

    Thanks for the follow-up.

    So the entries are incorrectly sorted in the dialog box? That is important information, which could probably help other users as well. :-)

    Thanks for the follow-up.

    I haven't seen any reports on this issue recently, but it has been observed in the past that certain items may be missing from the Cross-reference dialog box. I don't think anyone has been able to explain it.

    That they are showing up in an updated Table of Figures but not in the Cross-Reference dialog is, indeed, puzzling.

    What I would suggest, as a workaround, is:

    • Try deleting and recreating the problem captions.
    • Consider selecting and bookmarking the caption text. Cross-reference to the bookmarks.

    If you can, create a copy of your work with just a couple of the problem figures and their captions. Save that on OneDrive or DropBox, and post a view link here. Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting. How to do it.

    You can try the standard method of dealing with corrupt files by copying everything except the last paragraph mark in the document and pasting into a new document.

    As a workaround, enclose the figure caption and number in a bookmark and then insert a cross-reference to bookmark text.
