Style Set (Template) cannot be imported correctly anymore

Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2112 Build 16.0.14729.20224) 32-bit

I have long used my own Style Set. Since the last big Office update I cannot apply that Style Set to an empty Word document anymore. The Style Set has not changed. If I do, I get the following error message (see below) and the Quick Styles are not imported correctly (e.g., headings have their numbers missing).

I have re-created my Style Set from scratch (starting from the default one) and it shows the same error.

You can download my Style Set here: *************************************

I agree with John that the best method is to simply create a new document from the template.

Unfortunately, that does not deal well with transferring a set of styles to an already typed document.

One method that can sometimes work is to create such a new document, create a paragraph in each of the styles so they are firmly in use, and then copy the content of the existing document into the new one, merging formatting. Then delete the dummy paragraphs.

    Hi Phillip,

Here is my writing on *\[Quick\] Style Sets*.

Numbering does not work well with Quick Style Sets.

If your numbering was set up following the directions at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly, you can use the method described in A Global StyleSheet in Microsoft Word? and demonstrated in this free Add-In. Outline Heading Styles Global Stylesheet Add-In. The idea is to use a macro, and perhaps the Organizer method, to transfer styles. It does transfer numbering attached to the styles.

Report bugs using the feedback mechanisms. They do not see posts here.

How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?

I don't recognize the particular error message in your screen shot.

However, I agree with Charles and John that, generally, quick style sets are not a safe way to add numbered or bulleted styles to a document.

A useful alternative is to set up a template based on a known good document, so that the desired styles, including numbering, are defined in the template.

Create a new document from your template and then import existing content via the Insert File dialog box.

To display the Insert File dialog box, click Insert > Object > Text from File.

A style set is a disguised Word template. They're actually stored as .dotx files. It's more reliable to access a template than a style set, though. Give this a try:

    1. Open a File Explorer window and paste this into the address field:
      *%appdata%\Microsoft\QuickStyles*
    2. Copy your style set template.
    3. Open your Documents>Custom Office Templates folder.
    4. Paste in the template.

Then when you want to use your styles, choose File>New>Custom>Custom Office Templates, select your template and click on OK. All your styles will be available in the new document.
