MS word 2019 slow issue

Hi all,

I use MS Word 2019 and have a performance issue, namely laggy and slow response.

Interestingly, when I open the same file from my old laptop (win 10 home) it works without any issues while my newly purchased desktop (win 11 home) (and another desktop pc (Win 10 home) experience the problem.

Both desktop PCs are way better than the laptop in terms of PC specs, but I can not use Word without the lagging issue.

The Main PC Specs (SSD, 16GB Ram, 11th Gen Intel CPU, RTX3060)

Another Desktop (SSD 12GB, Core I3-3220, Integrated GPU)

Laptop (SSD 12GB, Core I3-2300t, Integrated GPU)

Looking at some previous posts, I have tried a couple of options, such as changing printer settings or disabling GPU hardware acceleration, but it does not solve the problem.

What else could I do to investigate and solve my problem?

Here's more detail.

-- I tried

GPU-hardware acceleration

Printer default setting

Add-in settings

safe mode

removing Normal.dotm

reinstalling Office

From the laptop, all word documents seem to work without any problems.

From the desktops, files work OK when the contents are not heavy and long.

After a few thousand words, it becomes a bit slow and laggy when typing or scrolling.

All add-ons are checked.

Updated-------------------------------------------------------

I have been troubleshooting and found new information.

On my desktop, when I copy and paste the entire contents of the troublemaking document onto a new document with keep text-only mode, laggishness? (lagging) disappears. The other four copy-and-paste modes carry lags into a new doc.

I use a lot of diagrams, tables of contents, references, tables, figures, cross-citations, tracking, comments, etc., which would be automatically disabled when copied and pasted with (keep text-only mode).

However, as I mentioned, I could use the original document without any problems from the laptop. So I wonder what is causing the issue.

The document has around 30k words.

When I try with a different document (word count around 20k), slowness was eased but still, I feel lags. ( and again this issue does not occur when using laptop).

any suggestions would be appreciated

    Hi rohnski2,

Thanks for your quick reply again!!

    All my computers use SSDs.

My main PC is a high-end gaming PC (e.g. 11th Gen Intel CPU, 16GB ram, RTX3060), so there should have no problems at all in terms of PC specs.

My old laptop is based on core i3-2100t (6,7 years old CPU) and 12GB ram with Intel integrated GPU. While my other desktop is similar to this laptop specs, I can use Word without issues only from the laptop computer.

I have been troubleshooting and found new information.

On my desktop, when I copy and paste the entire contents of the troublemaking document onto a new document with keep text-only mode, laggishness? (lagging) disappears. The other four copy-and-paste modes carry lags into a new doc.

However, as I mentioned, I could use the original document without any problems from the laptop. So I wonder what is causing the issue.

Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Thanks for confirming you've already done the appropriate trouble shooting for addons (safe mode) and file location.

    .

Yes, I expect that the new computer has better specs than the laptop if the computer was about 1/2-2/3 original cost of the laptops ("tech premium" for laptop hardware).

    .

The only way I can imagine that your new computer could be slower than the old laptop is if it is a very low end computer, $2-300, maybe a chromebook.

    .

30-40K words is not large, so any new computer should be able to handle them comfortably and open quickly.

    .

What are the specs on your new computer? Specifically your drive(s). Is your drive a HD or SSD? Any chance the laptop was using a SSD? How does the amount of RAM compare between the 2 machines.

    Hi rohnski2,

    Thanks for your comment.

I checked add-in through safe mode and also manually disabling all add-ins.

Files are usually in one drive, but I also checked them locally by downloading them.

Regardless of stored place, documents are very slow when using the Desktop PCs and no issue when opening from the laptop.

Because I edited more than 30,000 to 40,000 words, I first suspected PC spec. But the laptop is way older than the desktop PCs.

One of the desktop PCs is newly built (windows 11), so there should be no software-related issues such as file corruption.

    Regards,

    T

    Hi Adie,

    Thanks for your reply.

I was editing my posting, and I was gonna say that I have checked the add-ons related-causes.

    Thanks anyway!

    Hi Tet_541,

I'm Adie, and I'm happy to help you today.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. You may open Word in Safe Mode to determine if the add-ins are causing the problem. Press and hold the Ctrl key and double-click the Word shortcut. To ensure Word is in Safe Mode, you should see something like Microsoft Word (Safe Mode) in the title bar.

Check if the issue persists while in Safe Mode. If not, add-ins may be causing the issue. In Word, go to File > Options > Add-Ins > Manage: Com Add-ins > click Go. Uncheck all the add-ins. Close Word and restart it in Normal Mode.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards,

    Adie
