Custom number sequence for page numbers

Is there a way to add a new, custom page number sequence to list of page number formats in Microsoft Word? For example, instead of 1, 2, 3... or i, ii, iii..., I'd like my pages to be numbered 6, 3, 8, 2, 0, ... (any list of numbers or symbols I could construct). Is there a way to add such a list to the "Number format:" dropdown in the Page Number Format dialog box?

I guess the relevant information is that he's working with an ancient language.

Charles has given you the base answer.

BUT if your guy is really insistent he could do it with a custom font. The font would have to be designed with the special numeric characters in place of the digits 0-9. Then he would apply the custom font to the page numbers and Word could then do it for him.

You are welcome. Word, in other languages may have numbers that are different. But they would still be sequential.

    Hello,

This forum is a user-to-user support forum. My name is Charles and I am a fellow user with decades of experience using Microsoft Word. I have written extensively on using Word and have authored help articles on the Microsoft site.

Brief answer: No, there is not.
I include links to the following references not to give you a way to do what you request but rather to show some of what is possible.

Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

While I can imagine a macro to do this, constructing such a macro would be a fairly major project (i.e. more than a couple of days work) and I can't see it being worth that. Another way to do this would be to set each page as a separate section and individually set the page number. To do that automatically according to a given list would require a complex macro scheme. This would make the document very difficult to edit. Neither method would add this to the page number format menu in the dialog.

The formatted page number in Word is not only the number you have appear on a page but is also reflected in Tables of Contents, Indices, and Cross-References.

Could you tell me what you would hope to accomplish by doing this? It is possible that there may be some other way to accomplish your goal.

    I hope this information helps.

Thank you, Mr. Kenyon! I had run across your very thorough webpage in my initial research on this question.

I'm trying to find an answer for a writer who wants to include page numbers in a multi-language manuscript, using non-Roman characters. I had come to the same conclusion--that it could be done either manually with section breaks, adding the characters as images or possibly Unicode characters, or with some computer programming that would probably take just as long (and is not at all in my or his skill set).

Thanks for a quick response! It's good to have confirmation from an expert.
