Add Vancouver Reference Style to Word in Office 365 WIN 11

Articles on installing Bibword Vancouver XLS stylesheet in Word are either outdated or for Macs. I have copied the Vancouver.XSL file to here (below) but Word does not show the Vancouver option. What else do I need to do?

That is a good and clever suggestion. I found a version in one other location...

    "C:\Users\danss\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\LiveContent\16\Managed\Word Document Bibliography Styles\TM02851226[[fn=turabian]].xsl"

... which is similar to one of yours. However, the file name is altered and copying the vancover.XSL file there did not work.

So since the paper is due tomorrow I used a workaround and reformatted the citations manually.

This was probably a one-time need, hence the urgency, but I am not going to pursue the matter further.

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Yes, Bibword.

Endnote, unfortunately, is a $259 subscription, and I only need it once or twice.

Sorry to seem grouchy about the generic solutions. I had been frustrated with MS phone and chat support because they always spend a lot of time trying generic approaches when they do not actually know the solution.

The various approaches you find when you Google the problem include adding the new XSL file to one of two places, shown below. You can see that the Vancouver file I need is in both places. However, I tried deleting one of the other files, Chicago, and then opened Word and found that option still there. So there seems to be a disconnect between what is in the bibliography files and what shows up in Word.

Also, when I go to add a stylesheet to the bibliography styles folders it tells me I need administrator confirmation, and then I hit "Continue" and it goes through. I am also the Administrator, but is this a hold-up and how do I give consent? None of this seems to be documented anywhere I can find.

    Hence my frustration.

You may be able to use a free trial of EndNote. I do not know.

I do know that Microsoft has been very hesitant about updating their citation styles.

Try searching your disk for TURABIAN.XSL which is one of the built-in styles and opening the containing folder. Perhaps your is in a different folder for some reason. Make sure you are displaying hidden and system files when doing this. This is just a guess. I just ran it on my c drive and found more than one file with that name in more than one location.

At least a couple were in AppData, not in Program Files.

Have restarted both Word and the computer. File downloaded from Bitword, which is a standard source.

I am assuming that you are running the 64-bit version of Office. If not, you need to be in "Program Files (x86)" rather than in "Program Files."

    Otherwise, have you restarted Word?

    Restarted your computer?

What was the source of your file?
