Images in Office 365 Excel on Mac with M1 chip not showing

I have created a new document in Excel on my Mac and have either added pictures previously saved or used copy > paste special > paste as picture.

When I switch tabs to another sheet and then back, the pictures are not showing. Some come back when I click on them, others don't but it is very intermittent. If I print, the images do print correctly but it's tough to work on a document where the images keep disappearing.

If I take a copy of the file and open it on my Windows laptop (with Office 2010 installed) or another Mac (with Office for Mac 2011 installed) I have no issues seeing the images so I don't believe it's a problem with the file or the images.

It appears to be either a problem with Office 365 itself or it's implementation on the Mac with M1 chip.

I have verified that settings are configured to show all images

As confirmed from a previous email, I have the latest versions of both Big Sur and the products as it is a new computer that I just set up in the last week.

I'm not sure if this maybe was related to things from the installs but now a few days later and a reboot, things seem to be ok. If I encounter something similar I will respond but for now things seem fine.

I may have discovered a partial workaround and diagnosed a cause at the same time - this issue seems to happen when the sheet magnification is 100%. When I change it to say 120%, the image displays. When I change tabs and return to the original tab, the image disappears. If I scroll away so the image is not in view, and scroll back to the part of the sheet where the image should be, it reappears. It seems some combination of tab changing, on-screen view area, and sheet magnification are the cause and the solution for now...

I have the same problem! It's also the case that charts disappear as well. If you page down then back up in the same sheet they all re-appear ... but it's a pain in the neck. Rebooting solves the problem for a day or so ... then it starts to happen again. This is true for old sheets I've had forever, but also new ones that I just create.

I talked through support for 1/2 an hour and they were stumped. It does appear to be an M1 bug, as that's the MacBook pro I have as well.

I just updated to Monterey and the same problem is happening.

Thanks for getting something going here on it in the forum.

    Exact same problem.

Macbook Pro, 2021, latest Excel (o365) version installed.

Any news on this? It is annoying as I have several documents containing images.

    Thanks.

    Hi

Thank you for your question in this community. I am willing to help you answer your questions, according to your description of the problem:

You have tried to print and the display is normal, and there is no problem opening it in windows and another Mac.

You can try to insert the picture into Word for mac to see if the problem exists. This can help us find out whether the problem is in the Office product or the Mac system.

At the same time, you can also try to insert other pictures to see if the problem exists.

If the problem continues, you try to insert the picture into Notes (non-Office app). (To rule out the possibility of the problem)。

Thank you for your understanding and patience. Finally, please send me the test file private message , and we will do our best to help you solve the problem!

Which version of Excel are you currently using? You can check it through Excel>about Excel in the upper left corner,

You can try to update your Excel to the latest version, and then check whether the problem exists.

And What is the version of your mac?

    Best Regards

    Ethan
