Office Update Channels - When will updates in the Current Channel, hit the Monthly Channel?

In our MS tenant, I want a small group of people to be in the Current update Channel and all others in the Monthly update channel. I want a chance to see updates before the majority of the users so we can prepare for supporting the changes to the users' environments.

My question is, when I get an update in the Current Channel, how can I tell when that update will hit the Monthly channel so that I can tell the users approximately when they will get the update?

I went to the following website and noted that Monthly updates usually hit on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-microsoft365-apps-by-date

Would it be accurate to say that when a Monthly Channel update occurs, it should include all of the Current Channel updates that have happened since the last Monthly Channel update?

If not, what do I tell my users about when they can expect the update?

Hi Tandy Wine,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and sharing updates with us. And I appreciate your kind words.

Regarding to, "So if we deploy Current Channel (Preview), we will know what’s going to hit the regular Current Channel about a week in advance. Right?" yes you are correct .

Regarding to, "But how do I know what’s included in the Monthly channel update?" updated, features are released in Monthly Enterprise Channel on the second Tuesday of the month. These new features are features that are already available to all users in Current Channel. Features that are currently in Current Channel need to meet certain release criteria before they are included in a feature update for Monthly Enterprise Channel. Because of this, some features that are in Current Channel aren’t included right away in the next available feature update for Monthly Enterprise Channel.

You may check the article forFeature updatesin monthly channels(list of feature updates included in a given release of Monthly Enterprise Channel).

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

Best regards

Waqas Muhammad

Short answer: "Don't hold your breath"

OK, that's not what you or they want to hear, but it is the practical truth.

    .

In theory changes visible in current channel are rolled up into the next monthly channel release.

    .

Unfortunately, MS is not consistent when releasing features. They do a thing they call "phase rollout". Basically it means the expose new features to small groups of people. But the groups are somewhat random. The result is that people with apparently identical

    Hi Tandy Wine,

First, my pleasure to assist you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, I try my best to explain you.

As you know, Microsoft recommend Current Channel, because it provides your users with the newest Office features as soon as they are ready.

    Here are explanation:

    For Current Channel:

Provide your users with new Office features as soon as they are ready, but on no set schedule. At least once a month (likely more often), but on no set schedule.

Howevey, there is no set schedule for these updates, but in general there are two or three releases each month, including one on the second Tuesday of the month.

    For Monthly Enterprise Channel:

Provide your users with new Office features only once a month and on a predictable schedule. Once a month, on the second Tuesday of the month.

Regarding to, “My question is, when I get an update in the Current Channel, how can I tell when that update will hit the Monthly channel so that I can tell the users approximately when they will get the update?” to become familiar with the new features coming in the next feature release of Current Channel, we recommend that you use Current Channel (Preview).

There isn’t a set release schedule for Current Channel (Preview). In general, a new version of Current Channel (Preview) with new features is released at least a week or more before that new version is released to Current Channel. There might be several releases of Current Channel (Preview), with non-security updates, before that version is released to Current Channel.

You may deploy Current Channel (Preview) to a small, representative sample of users in your organization. This can help you identify any possible issues for your organization before those new features are released more broadly to your users that have Current Channel.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best regards

    Waqas Muhammad
