Highlight formatting does not save in .docx file, but saves in .doc

When I highlight text with the text highlight tool and save (as .docx) and close, when I reopen the document none of the highlighting has been saved. All other formattings, like bold text, are saved. If I save it as .doc then the highlighting does save. All highlight colors are affected. I have tried going to display options, but 'show highlighter marks' is already checked. I also tried updating with no luck. Any ideas why this might be happening and how to fix? Thank you!

As I said in the original post, I am using the text highlight tool, not the reading highlight. These are the highlights that are not being saved (in any color).

    Hi ALTully,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that your file will not save highlight text when you saved it as .docx, however, it works when you save it as .doc format. And you just used Highlight color tool under Home tab to highlight text.

At the same time, you have tried updating Office and checking Show highlighter marks, however, the same problem still persists.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, for the situation you encountered, we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

And we have also tested it with the latest version of Word and we cannot reproduce the same situation as yours. Given this situation, if all files have the same problem on your side, we will give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. You can open your Word in safe mode to check if the same problem will occur. As steps shown below: Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run.> In the Run box, type one of the command: winword /safe
    2. You can use Online Repair to fix the Office application. Repair an Office application. This will reset all Office settings.

We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem very soon. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, Please kindly provide more information below to let us work further.

    1. If the scenario above is not consistent with yours, could you provide more details about how you highlight text?
    2. May I know if all files have the same problem? We’d suggest you create a new file to check if the same problem will occur.
    3. May I know if the other office applications have the same problem? You can test with PowerPoint to check if the same problem will occur.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hello,

The problem does not always occur with files created from the templates, so not all files are affected. The templates are also shared with our clients from different sources (i.e. the local file from my desktop or from my colleague's desktop). However, all these local files were downloaded from originals on Sharepoint. There are two different templates that have been problematic.

I have tested the highlighting problem with one of the template files on my desktop.

    • In the local template file, the same problem occurs (highlight will not save in .docx format)
    • If I copy the template text and paste without formatting into a new .docx document, the problem is resolved

I believe you are correct that the problem originates from the templates. I will work with my supervisor to investigate the original templates on Sharepoint and see if we can resolve it by creating new template files. Do you know any reason this may occur so we can ensure that the problem is not repeated in future templates?

Thank you for your help. I will post back here with an update.

I just asked to make completely clear that we were referring to the same setting.

Here, I have no issues getting Text Highlight Color to save with the document (Word version 2201).

I see from your screen shot that you are running a preview version of Office, so this may be a new bug. I recommend that you report it using the Feedback facility (File > Feedback > Send a Frown).

Are you referring to using the Text Highlight Color tool on the Home tab? That type of Highlight should definitely stay with the document, assuming of course that you saved the document after having applied the highlight to text.

On the other hand, if you are referring to the Reading Highlight that can be applied from the Find tab of the Find & Replace dialog box (Ctrl+H), note that it won't be saved with the document.
