Bibliography in alphabetical order (Word for Mac)

Hello everyone,

I have just upgraded Microsoft Word for Mac from Version 16.16.27 16.16.17 to 16.59.

Since then, I have experienced a problem with the order of the bibliography.

In 16.16.27 16.16.17, the bibliography is always shown in alphabetical order, not so in 16.59.

As the deadline approaches, I am grateful for any help.

Many thanks,

Damian

    Hello Microsoft

Can you please let me know how we can solve this issue? Thank you.

Having the latest hardware and software products, I find it extremely hard to understand why I should solve this issue independently.

I have created a new document and tested it in both versions to show the problem.

16.16.27, the bibliography is arranged alphabetically:

16.59, the bibliography is not arranged alphabetically:

Thank you for your reply and your suggestion for a solution.

    Best regards,

    Damian

    Hi Damian_1987,

First, my pleasure to assist you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

You may try below trick, and I hope its help:

1.Copy the bibliography and paste as special>unformatted text.

2.Select Home tab>Paragraph section>Sort it in the right order.

Or Copy & Paste the bibliography /citations into TextEdit, then copy & paste them back into the Word document>go to Table in the Menu Bar and go to Sort.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best regards

    Waqas Muhammad

    Hello Bob,

Thank you very much for your message. This is very much appreciated!

Here you can see a screenshot of a test document in 16.16.27 16.59:

    Image

Here is a screenshot of the same document opened on 16.59 16.16.27. Unfortunately, I do not understand what order is used:

In both cases I have used this function to arrange the bibliography alphabetically:

    Image

I can confirm that the correct 'Harvard - Anglia' citation method is used.

I used old documents and created new ones and the problem remained in each case.

I am using the latest version too (16.59 / 22031300).

I can also confirm that I have not installed any third-party citation programmes.

Thank you very much for your reply!

    Best regards,
    Damian

"...not so in 16.59": Then what order is it in? Please provide a screen shot or illustration including the Citations. task pane

Have you confirmed that the correct Citation Style is being used?

Have you tried inserting a bibliography into a new or different document to determine whether it is a document specific issue?

FWIW it most likely is a local issue,,, There have been no other reports here I i'm no experiencing it here with v16.59 (22031300). [There were 2 releases of that update so confirm that you have that specific one.]

Do you have any 3rd party citation products installed?

    Hello Muhammad,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. I am happy to solve it as described for this piece of work.

However, there must be a problem somewhere in the 16.59 version that needs to be solved from your side.

Working with a bibliography as unformatted text cannot be the solution in the medium term. As soon as the bibliography is an unformatted text, all sources (incl. all the information) are no longer connected. Therefore no changes can be made to a source after unformatting.

You can imagine that this is not convenient when working daily with academic papers.

    Thank you for your thoughts,

    Damian
