Excel 365, Calculating (8 threads), lag time = unproductive

I have a very large file, 40KB, with a LOT of different formulas.

I am basically building a tool/small database within Excel for use.

All of a sudden I started seeing the calculating (8 threads) message and the lag time is unbearable.

  • I cleared contents in unused rows/columns
  • I do not have formulas that look up an entire row/column
  • workbook includes - 9 tabs, all with different info
  • largest tab uses 1500 row out to column BS.
  • Power Query connects additional information from outside the file.

Any advise on how best to troubleshoot?

Your knowledge is welcomed and revered.

Thanks

Hi JRo_Kemp

Thanks for your response. I ‘m following this thread.

As you mentioned the issue was happened in a specific workbook, may I know if you try to copy the all content to a new workbook to check the result, did it work?

Besides, we require you to use  Repair an Office application (microsoft.com) to check if the issue can be solved.

Disable all Excel add-ins>File>Options>Add-ins>then disable them to check the result. You can still enable them later on if you need them again.

Meanwhile, I did some researches and find an article about calculations , you can refer to Excel performance - Improving calculation performance | Microsoft Docs to see if it can give you some ideas.

Appreciate your patience and understanding.

Regards,

Stacey

    Hi JRo_Kemp,

First, my pleasure to assist you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

May I know does issue happened do specific Excel document? If the issue only happens to a specific file, the file may be corrupted. In this scenario, please copy/paste content to a new created Excel file, then check the outcomes.

If the issue happens to all Excel files including a new created one, the issue is more related to the Office app itself or your computer environment.

May I know have you tried to click "calculate now" under Formula tab in Excel. Also please try go File>Options>Advanced and under Formula turn on the multi-threaded formula calculation of excel and check the outcomes.

In the meantime, to confirm whether this is a bug in a specific version, please provide us the version information. To check version: Open Excel>File>Account>Product Information and capture a full screenshot and share here (Please mask your private message for protecting your private message) and we will be tested on that version and verify the result with you.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best regards

    Waqas Muhammad

    Hello.

    Some questions or/and remarks:

40 KB seems not to be a large file. Is the size correct?

You are using lots of formulas but no VBA coding?

You are trying to build a database application without programming?

Did the performance drop suddenly with any changes or did it get less performing over time (more formulas, more data)?

    Kind Regards

    Gerhard
