Proofing in Microsoft Word is in the text proofing language rather than the Office UI Language.

Hi,

So I'm currently learning Spanish in school. So of course, I change the proofing language into Spanish or Spanish (Traditonal Sort) and all was OK. That was, until Office was upgraded from 2019 to 365.

Now, when I change the proofing language, any menu option associated with proofing also changes into Spanish. Now, for a native speaker, this wouldn't be a problem. But I am not a native speaker, so I can't understand the messages that Office is trying to display.

Here are some images to display what I am refering too.

Now I can't find any option to only have the proofing in Spanish, and the UI in English.

If someone could please help me resolve this, that would be excellent!

I believe that the grammar & style suggestions are always displayed in the language that you are checking.

You can post feedback to Microsoft, via File > Feedback.

That isn't a big issue. It's the grammatical suggestions that would normally say things like "A comma would be better here" or "A question mark would sound better" or "A period should be used here". These are all in Spanish, and I am not confident enough to be able to learn all of these phrases in Spanish.

You are trying to learn Spanish, right? This is a way.

I know, it is not what you want, though.

No one here can tell you how to change this because there is no known method available.

No one here can explain the thinking of Microsoft's designers. Like Stefan, I think it makes sense to have the suggestions in the language being used rather than another; but I do not know that this is the reason.

How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?

I am unsure which you are changing.

    File > Options > Language

The best setting for the Office Display language is to Match Windows. Otherwise, pick English.

There is a separate setting for the proofing and authoring. Even with that set, if it is set to a different language than the Windows language, it is likely that you will need to modify the proofing language by selecting text and changing it. Hi StampyScouse,

First, my pleasure to assist you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

I understand you want to set your Office UI into English language and proofing set into Spanish.

You can choose the Office UI display language (English), and to set the authoring and proofing language (Spanish).

First, please allow me to explain:

The language options are in the Set the Office Language Preferences section of the Office Options dialog box, which you can access by going to File > Options > Language. The display and authoring languages can be set independently.

As you mentioned, "Now, when I change the proofing language, any menu option associated with proofing also changes into Spanish." I'm not sure how did you set. But to add a display language (UI English) like ribbon, buttons, dialog boxes, etc. and an authoring language (proofing language, Spanish) like include proofing tools such as dictionaries for spelling and grammar checking. See below information:

To add a display language (UI English) like ribbon, buttons, dialog boxes, etc.

Open Word>Select File>Options>Language>Under Office display language, on the Set the Office Language Preferences > select English (by selecting Set as Preferred).

For authoring language: like include proofing tools such as dictionaries for spelling and grammar checking.

In Word>Select File>Options>Language>Under Office display language, on the Set the Office Language Preferences> Choose the Spanish language in the Add an authoring language dialog and then select Add **** (by selecting Set as Preferred).

Note: you need to close all Office 365, restart your machine/pc to take effort.

Result from my side: Menu option is in English.

For your reference: Change the language Office uses in its menus and proofing tools

But you mentioned, "Editor/Spellcheck suggestions show up in Spanish. This is what I want too know how to change" May I know are you want to change spellcheck in Spanish? On the Review tab select Language > Set Proofing Language.

Meanwhile, could you please provide us the version information. To check version: Open any Office e.g., Word>File>Account>Product Information and capture a full screenshot and share here (Please mask your private message for protecting your private message) and we will be tested on that version and verify the result with you.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best regards

    Waqas Muhammad

    This isn't my issue.

The office UI is set too English.

The proofing language is set to Spanish.

Editor/Spellcheck suggestions show up in Spanish. This is what I want too know how to change.
