OneDrive showing minus icon but files are actually syncing

My team member is seeing the grey minus sign on some files/folders in Finder (MacOS) but the files and folders are actually syncing to the cloud (and to the drives of other team members). How do we stop this from happening?

All of the files shown above are syncing to the cloud. If we change the filename or edit the file, it syncs. But if she changes a file that does not have the minus icon then the minus icon will appear. This has just started happening in the past few days.

We're using OneDrive for business on Macs. She has the latest OneDrive client installed. We've tried repeatedly logging in and out of the OneDrive app. There are no errors showing in the sync icon in the toolbar so there is no option to "repair". She is only logged into a single, business OneDrive account, she is not logged into any personal OneDrive accounts.

Essentially everything is working but the minus icon is showing and appearing with every new change that she makes to files.

Hi Scott Watkins KISCO,

I noticed, you have posted in another thread mentioning that removing OneDrive preferences files fixed the issue. Glad to know the outcome.

Hi @Neha, things have stabilised today.

Myself and my teammate can both now upload and download files through Finder and they do sync to the cloud. Interestingly, no other team members were effected even though they use the same library.

So, we are now back to the initial situation - my teammate can upload and download files but anything new she creates or changes (any file type) is marked with the (-) sign. She is the only one who can see the (-) sign, I can see, download, open and edit the files either from Safari or from my own hard drive (synced to my laptop).

    To answer your questions.

I can't check other libraries now - that'll have to wait until Monday.
    Yes, offline availability is enabled.
    MacOS 12.01
    OneDrive app is standalone 22.012.0117.0003
At no point has there ever been any messages in the OneDrive icon in the menu bar for any of us. My colleague's menu bar icon says "OneDrive is up to date" at all times, despite the presence of the (-) signs across many directories and files.

    Thanks!

    Hi Scott,

May I know if you see the same sign in other libraries of same and different SharePoint site?

As this is happening with all the team members, I suppose there might be some changes in the settings. Please open a browser, go to the affected library in the site and the go to Library Settings> Advanced settings, check if Offline Client Availability option (Allow items from this document library to be downloaded to offline clients? ) is set to Yes or No.

Besides, also check if the OneDrive icon in the menu bar showing any sign or a message.

Further, may I know the version of your macOS and OneDrive app and whether OneDrive is installed from Mac app store or is a standalone version.

    Regards,

    Neha

    Hi @neha, thanks for responding.

Unfortunately the situation is worsening and changing.

    1. This is happening with all file types. We definitely do NOT have any Outlook files in any of these directories and our site admins have not blocked any file types. My team all access the same Sharepoint Library through OneDrive and, until a few hours ago, this is only happening with one person.
    2. We tried adding a brand new word document (test.docx) to the OneDrive folder and encountered three things. Firstly, it is extremely slow to upload and save. Secondly, as soon as that document was added to OneDrive the (-) appeared beside it. Finally, this document does not upload to the cloud. This is a worsening of the situation I reported yesterday. Now it seems that my colleague cannot upload or download any files from OneDrive.

    1. The problems are now effecting me as well as my team member. 8 hours ago I could upload files using Finder without problems, they were syncing to the cloud. However, sometime since then things have changed and now whatever file type I save to OneDrive (docx for example) will not sync to the cloud. There is no message in the OneDrive icon on the tool bar, it says "One Drive is up to date" but the files are just showing as syncing see:

I am not seeing any (-) icon on my files.

    1. I can still download files from OneDrive using Safari. However, my colleague cannot download any files using Safari. Until yesterday she could. I have checked her Safari settings and she has "allow" set for the site. She can download from Chrome. This all started changing yesterday.

This feels like something is spreading across our team and is definitely a worsening situation. All help very much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Scott

    Hi Scott,

May I know if this is happening only with the files that have .jpg format?

Based on my search, the icon means that the IT admin has prevented the OneDrive sync app from uploading certain files to OneDrive or SharePoint. This setting prevents file types from being uploaded but not downloaded. If users already have blocked file types in their OneDrive, the files will sync to their computer, but any changes they make on their computer won't be uploaded.

In Finder, the files appear with an “Excluded from sync” icon.

Please check the OneDrive activity center, see if it shows a message.

Also, check if only sign shows next to jpg file are other file type affected. Try saving a Word or PowerPoint file in the affected folder, check if it shows the same sign.

    Let me know the status.

    Regards,

    Neha
