While creating a document several days ago my PC locked up a couple of times. Now when I trry to access it I can only open a read-only copy because the file is in use !! I cannot close it because I can't see it, if I try to delete it I am told I can't because it is open in winword.exe. I have renamed a copy that I can now work with but how do I get rid of the "open file"

Hi Buzz249, hope you're doing well. I’m Ian, and I’m happy to help you today.

    Please try the step below.

    1. Quit all instances of Word on your system.
    2. Display the Task Manager. (Right-click on the Task bar and choose Task Manager)
    3. Click on the Processes tab.
    4. In the list of processes, find any named Winword.exe, select them, and click on End Process. (If you see a warning dialog box, click on Yes.)
    5. Close the Task Manager.
    6. Click on start->run->type %temp% and select all the files and delete them.
    7. Click on start->run->type %appdata%\Microsoft\Word and select all the files and delete them
