#VALUE error when multiplying the contents of A1 with B1

When I try and multiply 2 cells e.g. 2.2 (in A1) by 10 (in B1) I use =A1*B1 and I get #VALUE

If however I type my data as 2,2 by 10 and I type =A1*B1 I get the correct answer 22.

Why if I use the comma in A1 do I get the correct answer?

Help please!

    Rory hit the nail on the head re the probable cause but the location of the settings doesn't apply on a Mac... First, Quit Excel, then go to **> System Preferences> Language & Region** to choose the correct Region. Also, click the Advanced button to confirm the correct Number Separators are specified.

    Your regional settings must be set to use a comma as the decimal separator, or your Excel options are set to use different separators to the OS (that would be set in File - Options - Advanced section).
