Unable to find Caption in document.

Working on a manuscript that contains a "page spread" or "photo spread" (an image across two pages).

Example of generic (page/photo) "spread":

Added a figure caption to one of the images in order for it to appear within table of figures, which works fine. However, I now need to edit said caption and I am unable to find same. The caption appears to be below one of the images, but even when the image is Hidden or moved, the caption is not visible.

I have tried the following to no avail:

  • Show/Hide Paragraph Marks and Symbols
  • Options > Display > Hidden Text
  • Options > Advanced > Show drawing and text boxes on screen
  • Options > Advanced > Show text boundaries
  • View Fields (Alt-F9)

Thank you!

You are welcome. I knew it was there by seeing the Text Box in the Selection Pane. That allowed me to (1) select the textbox, thus (2) get access to the Text Box tab where I could manipulate it.

This one was tougher than I expected. As Suzanne pointed out, Find does not find text in the Caption style nor does it find SEQ fields. That is apparently because the Caption is in a textbox. Find does not find things in a textbox. I even used a macro to look for it without success! This is because textboxes are in a different layer or "story" in Word's document logic.

Further, that textbox is very narrow and extends off the screen!
It is more than 19" wide and is only .17" high with the text off the screen.

The screenshot below shows the steps I took after using the selection pane to select the text box.

    1. Select the text box
    2. Go to the Text Box tab
    3. Change the width of the text box to 3"
    4. Click on the Position button and
    5. Change the position of the textbox to the center of the page.

At that point, you can edit it. Then use the Send Backwards menu item to send it to the back, where it will be behind the picture.

I have no idea how it got this way to start with, but it is there and can be edited. I hope this helps you out.

    Hello Jerry,

Try using the Object Selection pane to find it.

On the home tab If you click on select and then the Select Object pane you will get a pane that lists objects on the page.

If you want, save a sample document with the problem on OneDrive or Dropbox and paste a view link here. That should not contain any confidential or proprietary information.

You can use the Rand or Lorem AutoCorrect function to produce dummy text for a sample document. In a new line, typing =Rand(4,5) and pressing the Enter key will produce four paragraphs, each with five sentences of Microsoft Help text. Typing Lorem(4,5) and pressing the Enter key will produce four paragraphs of pseudo-Latin text.
