    Hi Scott

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

What version of Microsoft Office do you have installed on your PC, is that a subscription to Microsoft 365, or a one-time payment version of Office?

    1

If that is Microsoft 365, then if you store your documents on OneDrive, then AutoSave will be enabled at the top left of Word, and you cannot lose your work.

    2

If you use a standalone one-time payment version of Office, then be sure that Auto-recover is enabled, that will save a backup of your files, in Word, go to File - Account, then click Save on the left, and you can see the Auto-recover option on the right.
