You cant make this change because the selection is locked - Microsoft Word Mac

Hi-

When I try to make a change to ANY word doc I get the message: "You can't make this change because the selection is locked".

Also, all Word commands are greyed out. See examples below.

Specifically, the File New Document command is greyed out.

This has happened once before a while back - don't know how I resolved it.

Clearly this has NOTHING to do with the files.

So frustrating - I am guessing it has something to do with activation/license etc., but don't know what to do. Any suggestions and advice will be much appreciated.

I am on a Mac OS Monterey.

THANKS!

If you're using MS365, make sure that it's not expired.

Try to run first aid to fix minimal issues on Office Apps [Spotlight > Disk Utility > Macintosh HD > First Aid > Run]. Don't interrupt and wait for it to finish the first aid.

    Restart Device

    Then try again
