Hi,

One of my clients had an issue in which he uploaded some PDF files to SharePoint online.

Not sure whether the upload was done via syn location and directly from online.

But, the user has now noticed that the files which he had uploaded, when opening in online, it is showing error as shown below

And when clicking on "Open in browser", that is also showing error as "Error, cannot open PDF"

User also mentioned that, the local version of the file is working fine, and he uploaded the working version of the file.

Why this issue could be happening ?

    Hi there,

I'm not the original poster, but am experiencing the same issue and wanted to share answers to your questions based on troubleshooting done by our team:

    a. Does the problem happens with a specific PDF file or any PDF file? Any PDF file.

    b. If the same PDF file is uploaded to a different Document Library or another SharePoint Online site, can the PDF be previewed? We have found that this same file will require re-uploading to the SharePoint site and on the 4th or 5th attempt, the file is successfully uploaded. Until then, it will continue to show invalid. We are currently using the info button within the folder to see if the Preview displays. If the preview does not display, it means that the PDF needs to be re-uploaded.

    c. Do other users who can access the site also encounter the same behavior? Yes.

d**. Can the user preview or open the Office files without any problem?** No. The issue impacts all users after the PDF is uploaded. Local files are still accessible and no issue.

Originally, I thought this issue was tied to one user but it is actually non-descript and is impacting multiple users at different frequencies. This issue has been prevalent since early July, but we're just now noticing it as we are beginning to access and reference these PDF files and now have to retrace our steps.

    Hello Mathew,

Per the description shared, I understand the problem facing at your end i.e, the user who uploads the PDF into the Document Library of SharePoint Online site can't preview or open the PDF in the browser.

Generally, the PDF can be either previewed or opened in the browser in SharePoint Online without any additional feature enabling. So, I would like to confirm the following scenarios which will help us to move further on the situation:

    a. Does the problem happens with a specific PDF file or any PDF file?

    b. If the same PDF file is uploaded to a different Document Library or another SharePoint Online site, can the PDF be previewed?

    c. Do other users who can access the site also encounter the same behavior?

    d. Can the user preview or open the Office files without any problem?

    Appreciate your understanding!!

    Best Regards,
    Chitrahaas
