Microsoft word "not responding" when I "save" a word document.

Recently when using word I have been unable to save any of my new inputs to a document. I have been using this document for days, and it was all working fine even earlier today.

When I click "save" the cursor switches to the "loading hourglass" and stays like that with nothing happening, when I then click on the word document it gets an opaque/faded color and indicates that it is "not responding".

This has happened every time I tried to save the document after making small changes since. I have tried rebooting, I tried "resetting" word data, I have tried the troubleshooter in multiple different ways, I have tried running as administrator, I have no add-ins enabled. Nothing seems to be working.

This problem does seem to have some strange behavior. I noticed that when I open my word file, and add a few words to the text, and then save, it seems to work fine. But whenever I insert a "bullet" the save-crash happens. I tried inserting bullets in every different way possible and every time I save after inserting a bullet, word ends up "not responding".

Please, I need help fast, I am a medical student going through final exams right now and my most important notes are all on microsoft word. I have a huge exam in under 14 hours.

Thank you

Dear charl,

Thank you for the reply.

Since the problem only happened on a specific file, you can try to Open-and-repair this file to see the result: Open a document after a file corruption error (microsoft.com).

If the problem persists, you could also try to create a new file and then copy/paste the content from the problematic one to the new one manually to see the result.

Sincerely,

    Dear charl,

Good day! Thank you for posting your query in our community.

Based on your description, when you try to insert the bullets in Word document, Word app will become "not responding". I tested it on my side, and there was no problem.

To check whether the issue is related to the specific file, or the Word application, could you please try to create a new file to see if the problem happens again?

If it appears in all Word files, then it may be a problem with the Word client. You can try to fix Office client, by performing a repair. Try a quick repair first, and if that doesn't work, try the online repair.

And please provide screenshots of the error message and your Word product information(open Word >File>Account>capture a screenshot of the Product Information column) for me.

Additionally, you mentioned "my most important notes are all on microsoft word", to prevent data loss, please make a backup copy of your document, or you can upload the copy of the document to a cloud service like OneDrive.

    Appreciate your cooperation in advance.

    Sincerely,

    Thank you for your response.

    I still have this problem.

It only happens to my one word document.

Since last time, I have discovered that after clicking save, the “not responding” event occurs as described above, but if I wait for two minutes, it eventually stops and the save is completed.

This is very annoying and hinders my progress.

I also notice that during this overly long and strange save, my computer becomes extremely strained and a large amount of power and energy goes into each save (Power usage is at Very high), and CPU climbs from 0% to 23%, despite RAM and disc being unaffected and at stable levels.
