System Error &H8000FFFF (-2147418113). Catastrophic failure

We have developed a complex workbook that uses an API to extract information from another system, and using macros the information is brought to other sheets where is presented in different formats,

We have a template workbook from which each user creates their own copy, extract the information that would be processed. The workbook is used by both Windows and Mac users.

It has happen twice that a user start to have the "System Error &H8000FFFF (-2147418113). Catastrophic failure" when they tried to open the workbook, or when they add/modify a cell and then try to save the workbook. Now, if some other user opens the workbook it work just fine. We are all using the same version of Excel, and everyone is at the same version of updates. In one case, after several weeks of having the issue, all of a sudden... it disappeared, but there still a user that still can't save the file. After the message pops up nothing else can be done, the only alternative is to kill Excel. Resources are typically less that 50% used.

I started having this problem late last this week after the infrastructure team pushed Office updates to our laptops.

The current version is: Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2204 Build 16.0.15128.20210) 64-bit

Excel and/or the file kept crashing at the point in my script where a pivot table tried to refresh with source data that is a table populated with an OData connection. I tried a whole pile of things to get the file working again. Nothing seemed to work. Changing my display setting from 125 to 150 solved the problem. That is bizarre. Thank you Snoek for figuring this out. I don't think I ever would have thought to change that setting.

One additional piece of info, in case someone at MSFT reads this. The file I'm using is synced from a Teams site, which is effective a Sharepoint document store.

Did you ever found this issue?

I'm having the same problem and it only occurs when users have there display settings on there laptop on 125% or 175%. 100% and 150% are working fine.

And it happens when a dropbox value from my custom ribbon is selected. I didn't find a solution for this yet :(

Hi, the behavior has change now, the user having issues, reinstalled office and now as soon as she opens the workbook the error shows up, and it freezes Excel needing to end the task.
There is a routine that is executed during Workbook_Open(), for testing purposes, we removed the routine, with same results.

    Regarding your questions:

    1. Nothing changes in SafeMode, the error still shows up
    2. I have created a new instance of the workbook, works fine for me, but not for the user

Regarding the information to be confirmed:

    1. The issue is happening only with this workbook
    2. Copy of the error message Image
    3. Excel version showing errors

Note that I have another version: Version 2202 (Build 14931.29132 Click-to-Run)

    1. Other Workbooks work fine…

I had the same problem with a file on sharepoint.

Recently I encountered a sharepoint acces issue while I was working on this file. I had to restart onedrive on my PC (log out and in again) to regain access via Windows explorer to my workfiles. I was working on this specific file when this happened. After this glitch the macros in the file started to give this exact error (System Error &H8000FFFF (-2147418113). Catastrophic failure).

By reverting to an old file from before the access glitch all macros worked again. So I'm guessing the error was caused by the glitch in Sharepoint/Onedrive access while I was working on the file (I use automatic saving, 15 min)

So one solution might be to return to a version of the file before the error appeared (if you have one)

    Hello Alonso Villalobos,

Good day to you. Thanks for querying in this forum.

According to your description, the error message appears when a user tries to open, modify and save a workbook. The workbook contains macro. It seems like currently only one user has this issue. Since you post the question in Windows category, we suppose the affected user is using Excel on Windows.

If there is something we misunderstood, feel free to point it out.

We understand the issue has affected your daily work. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We'd like to share following suggestions.

1.You may let the user try opening Excel in safe mode, then go to open the Excel workbook(if it asks enable macro, enable it), then modify cells and see if he can save the workbook. If safe mode works, the issue may be caused by add-ins in Excel.

2.Since other users can open the workbook without any error message, you may let them save a copy for the workbook and share the copy with the affected user. Let him check if the copy work for him.

In addition, could you also confirm the information below? It will help narrow down the situation.

    1. Does the user encounter the error message when he tries to save the specific Excel workbook with VBA or any other Excel workbooks with VBA?

2.Please share a screenshot of the error message.

3.What is the version of that user's Excel? Could you let him go to File>Account, on the Account page, capture a full screenshot of Product Information, as shown below?

    1. If the user saves a normal Excel file which doesn't contain macro, does it work? Is the error message still show up?

Thanks for your patience and understanding. Hope you are keeping safe and healthy.

    Best regards,

    Tina
