Shaded headings

Hi. I'm editing a document that has shaded headings, like the first one in the shared file. Is it a text box? I'd like to simplify that by using simple shading instead of text boxes (the second one in the file) - think it will be easier for my clients to work with - but not sure if I can apply space above and below the heading text within the shading. I've applied 15 pt above and below in the example but the shading itself remains the same depth. Is there any way of getting it to look like the first heading without using text boxes?

Thank you, Dollo https://xxxs-my.sharepoint.com/:w:/g/personal/xxxx\_xxxx\_ul\_ie/Eed2ZA22N7tFuisNAYyvkbcB7l95rN\_vBeQtxVFioWR3oQ?e=pxxxx

This can be done with shading, but you have to be a bit more creative. Using the Borders and Shading dialog, apply the desired shading color to the paragraph. Then switch to the Borders tab and apply a Box border, using the same color. Click Options... and change the "From text" settings as needed. You can set each side individually, from 0 pt to 31 pt, which should probably be adequate for your purposes. These settings can be incorporated in the heading style.

You can modify the heading style to include shading. Click in your heading and press Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles pane. Click the Modify button. In the Modify Style dialog box, click the Format drop down and then click Border. On the Shading tab of the dialog box, make the desired changes.

If you want you can add a Frame with shading and/or a border to the style definition as well.

    Creating Frames in Word

Unlike textboxes, frames can be a part of a style definition.

Thank you very much for that Neha. I really don't want to use either text or shape boxes for headings - too messy. In the simple heading style with shading, is there any way of making the shading deeper?

    Thanks, Dollo

    Dear Dollo248,

    Good day.

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I removed the URL from your post as it contains your personal information (your tenant and email address) and uploaded your file in the following link for others to view.

    Shaded headings- Document

I checked your Word document, when you select the box, a new tab appears on the ribbon i.e., Shape Format indicating it is either a Shape or a Text box and also, there are two boxes overlapping each other as shown below,

    Image

Text boxes and Shape boxes are both containers for text that can be positioned on a page and sized. Based on my test, I believe it is a Shape box inserted from the Insert tab>Shapes. A Shape box position text or graphics that contain certain items whereas a Text box will make text flow and re-size the box according to the amount of text entered in the box.

The second heading is simply a Heading style with shading.

You can also resize the box to change its size or you can simply remove it and then add a heading style with shading.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Neha
