Word hanging when exporting to PDF

HI,

order of events

1: type document

2: export to pdf - works fine here

3: add table contents

4 export to pdf - hangs and never exports

I'm trying to export a word document to PDF using the steps described above, I export the document immediately after finishing typing this works as intended. I then add a table of contents and then export the file to PDF once more to find that word now hangs. This issue is with version Microsoft word 2016 MSO

2204 build 16.0.15128.20210.

I've left this hang for about 30 mins before terminating the application. this issue only started to occur after the most recent update on the 7 May.

I've attempted to removed windows updates that occurred after the 7 May this did not resolve the issue.

I assume that a memory leak has been introduced in the most recent update when the circumstances described above are met.

Any help would be of great use.

EDIT:*

I've tried removing the table of contents to the end of the document and running the export this works, however, the table of contents is not where I want it in the document.

Workaround:

1: Delete Table of contents

2: Add Table of contents to end of document

3: Delete Table of contents at end of document

4 : ReAdd table of contents to front of document.

    Dear Mleipper,

We deeply understand you have spent much time troubleshooting this issue. Very sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you for sharing the workaround here, it will definitely benefit other community members who have the similar issue in Word.

In addition, we tried to test in Word to export document to PDF, the document has Table of Contents added in front of the document. We didn't reproduce Word hanging issue.

However, we do understand this issue has affected your daily work and other users are also seeing the issue in same version of Word. Considering it looks like it stated to occur after a recent Windows update, we sincerely recommend you report this issue via Help tab>Feedback, or File>Feedback within Word, and feedback by using the Feedback Hub on Windows at the same time. Feedback submit by this way directly goes to the related team. This would be the best way to let the developers aware of this issue, help do investigation and work to fix it.

Your patience and understanding will be highly appreciated. We hope you are keeping safe and well!

    Best regards,

    Tina

Thank you for the suggestion, unfortunately, this failed to resolve the issue. I've since spoken to a number of other individuals with my organisation and they are all seeing the same issue on this exact version.
