Excel in Office 2021 compatibility

Hi!

I am currently using Office 365 and Office 2019.

I have built some excel models using Office 365 and found that it cannot be run in Office 2019. For example, formula XLOOPUP is not supported in Office 2019.

In general upgrading Office to newer version (say 2013 -> 2017 -> 2019 -> 2021) should not have any compatibility issue.

May I know if Office 365 -> 2021 is the same case?

(My main concern is whether my excel model built in Office 365 is fully supported in Office 2021.

Thanks!

Dear Terrence,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

If you use Office 2021, you will get Classic 2021 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. But if you have Microsoft 365, you will get the 365 versions of these apps.

Currently, there's no major distinction between them in terms of features, and Office 2021 has almost all features released in Microsoft Office 365. So if you switch to Excel 2021 you will be able to use the features of Excel 365.

However, with the Classic 2021 version, you won't get any further updates or new features in the future.

Sincerely,

Igor | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Thanks Norman!

I have similar finding too. So in future if there are new features in Excel 365, Office 2021 cannot support.

But given that current Excel 2021 is the latest version, for previously built excel model using Excel 365, may I know if it is in general can be run by Excel 2021?

See the Microsoft Support article What's the difference between Microsoft 365 and Office 2021?

In brief, Excel 365 will have the latest functionality and features, unlike Excel 2021 or earlier standalone versions.

In consequence, if you use new Excel 365 features or functions, these will not be recognised by Excel 2021.
