Bug: VisioWeb: Inserting title shape (from banners block) breaks future editability due to license error

Last week I stumbled onto a major bug in VisioWeb that breaks all future editability of a vsdx-file and thus prevents me from editing most of the diagrams I have created so far.

Background:  Visio web on a M365 basic license plan

For more than half a year, I was able to create and subsequently edit many vsdx-Visio diagrams on Visio Web with said M365 basic license just fine.

Recently I discovered that I cannot edit many of these files anymore due to a license error (even though I created these files with the same license)

The bug is reproducible as follows:

  • I can create, save and later edit Visio files on the web just fine.
  • However, once I insert a title block from the banners group, then save and close the file and then open it again, I get a license error: (Roughly translated, I am using the German version: „License required: You can view and comment this file, but you do not have the required license to edit“)

Please fix this asap, as it prevents me from editing most of my old files!

Appendix: Screenshots to illustrate the problem
a) created new vsdx-drawing on the web, save, close, reopen in view-mode

b) edit in browser:

c) add banner shapes

d) add title block, save, close

e) reopen in view-mode, chose edit in browser again

f) failure to edit due to license error

g) I haven't tested all the shapes in the banner block, but others do not break future editablility (the centered title block for example works just fine):

    Hello Prakash,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem.

I am aware that the Web-Version of Visio with a Basic 365 License is limited to what blocks/shapes it can create & edit (your first link Types of diagrams that are supported in Visio in Microsoft 365)

    However,

    a) I have only ever been using Visio Web with that Basic M365 license to create my diagrams (no desktop versions, no other Visio plans etc.).

So I would strongly hope that this version & license only lets me create files that I can later edit with the same Visio Web-Version on the same M365 Basic license.

Everything else would be just a huge garbled mess.

So comparing the types of diagrams that are supported to the shape blocks a I can add in Visio web, I get the following:

    • I can see and add all the shapes that the supported types table says I should be able to use
    • With the exception beeing the network diagrams? (However, they are not whats causing the error mentioned in the first post)

    b) the license error when reopening occurs when I have previoulys added a certain title shape from the banners block.

The banner shapes are part of the standard diagrams that I clearly should be able to use with the Basic M365 License, according to above table.

However, once I add this certain title block (highlighted in the screenshot below), I get the license error when I try the edit the file again later.

I have tested some of the other shapes in the "Banners" section, they do not show this behavior.

This is clearly not something I am doing wrong, but a bug Microsoft needs to fix. Since I do not know how to get in touch with them, I am writing here.

    Best regards,

    Christian

    Hello

I am Prakash and I will be glad to assist you today with your question.

The table in the following page lists the types of diagrams that Visio in Microsoft 365 allows you to create and/or update as well as their limitations. It also contrasts these features with those of Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2.
