Columns in Word: why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I am writing a text in two columns in Word but even though I am not including any page breaks or anything weird besides images, the text keeps going from one column to the other. Why does this happen and how can I fix it? Here I attach a screenshot of the document which shows how one paragraph goes from the left to the right column, then goes back to the left, and then keeps going downwards, as it should have done from the beginning.

You most likely have a section break between the two columns at the top and one column at the bottom. Choose File>Options>Display, check Show all formatting marks. Then remove the break. If that doesn't solve the problem, please take a screen shot with the formatting marks visible and post that.

It's also possible that there's an automatic page break where the text returns from the right column to the left column (between inmensa and mayoría), and that "white space" is hidden. Ordinarily that would appear as a thin horizontal line across the page

and when the mouse cursor hovers over the line, the cursor appears as a double arrow with instruction to double-click to restore the normal page separation.
