Author name in MS Word

When I create an MS Word document, it automatically saves me as the author of the document. When I send this over to someone to work on that and is saved by the second person, can the author name changes automatically? Is there any known issue like this ? Or the author name has to be changed manually from Info?

If another person saves the document on their computer, Word automatically adds them as a "Last Modified By" entry like this:

If you want them to be shown as an Author, though, you must click the "Add an author" link.

Thank you Jay. This was my understanding too. Someone mentioned to me that there a known problem with Word that this is not a consistent behaviour and sometimes word automatically saves the next user as Author. I actually highly doubt this to be the case. So wanted to check if anyone else came across this behaviour.

I am trying to investigate if plagiarism is in play.
