Font not saving to PDF clearly

Hi. A few years ago, I had trouble saving a Word document as a PDF, but did manage in the end. Now I'm having the same problem and can't remember how I got around the problem last time.

The problem is that although the font I used saves perfectly clearly in the main text, the same font used in the diagrams appears emboldened and slightly fuzzy. - if I remember rightly, this has something to do with the characters being converted to dots rather than the font being embedded.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. Best wishes,

Mike

After some experimenting, I find that Word will embed the entire font in the .docx file of a document in Word format, but it insists on saving only the subset of characters used in the document when I save as a PDF. You can see that in the difference of the file sizes:

I think that embedding the full font in the PDF may require Adobe Acrobat.

If you send me a copy of the document, referencing this thread in the covering email message, I will investigate the issue.

Hi. Thanks again Jay. Last time I did this, I managed to do it without Acrobat. I just can't seem to replicate it this time. It's the same Word document, slightly edited, and using the same version of Word (2010). I had to stick with this version of Word because only eps images would print clearly from the final pdf, and later versions of Word won't accept eps files. (The diagrams were created on Inkscape.)

Hi Jay. Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, for some reason, this doesn't resolve the problem....

The part about bitmapping (using pixels instead of mathematical outlines) comes from the options dialog you can open from the Save As dialog when you choose to save as a PDF:

To avoid bitmapping, you can choose to embed part or all of the font(s) in the PDF. The necessary setting is in Word's File > Options > Save dialog (also available by clicking the Tools item at the bottom of the Save As dialog and choosing Save Options in the menu):
