Doug's advice is correct, but the phenomenon you're seeing results from using the default tab stops, which are set at intervals of 0.5". In your screen shot, the tab space after (i) appears shorter because the text begins at a tab stop and takes up some of the half inch between there and the next one. When you set custom tab stops, you will see these settings on the horizontal ruler (and they can be different for different paragraphs and styles); the default tab stops are not displayed.
