Are you trying to use the browser-based versions of Office programs? These are free and they will always be inferior to the full product.
It is not clear if you already have a subscription or if you simply don't like the concept. Obviously, any subscription will be expensive in the long run.
If you prefer a perpetual (one-time purchase) license, note that you can still get such a version. The limitation is that you can only install on one device (and for one user). You can get Office Home & Student (if you don't need Outlook) or Office Home & Business (if you do need Outlook).
No matter if you have a subscription or a perpetual license, you can install Office programs locally in much the same way as older versions.
By default, the programs will save data files in OneDrive, but you can choose the local computer as the default. Start an Office product such as Word, click File > Options > Save and check the box next to "Save to Computer by default."
