How do I insert page numbers in a document with existing footers?

I was compiling a few documents into a single one and most of them don't have footers while the one that did I put in as a sub document. The page numbers stopped at the one document because it already had a footer as part of its template. And when I tried to insert page numbers, it replaced the existing footer. Is there a way to add page numbers without disturbing the existing footer?

    The easiest way is to access the footer, place the insertion point where you want the page number to be, and press Alt+Shift+P. If you want one of the fancy page numbers, you can use the Page Number menu in the Header & Footer group on the Header & Footer tab. Just be sure to choose Current Position instead of one of the other options.

    Double-click in the footer area.

    Place the insertion point where you want the page number.

    Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field brackets { } (do not type { } yourself, that won't work).

    Type the word PAGE between the brackets. You should now see { PAGE }

    Press F9 to hide the field code.

    Double-click in the main body of the document.
