Hi,

Short description:

In the Finder, all I can see is "Loading...", with `"OneDrive" encountered an unexpected error. Items may be out of date' at the top of the window.

Detailed explanation:

I haven't been able to use OneDrive since last February.

The same problem occur on two computers: MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015 and iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2015.

The problem occur with my primary (macOS) user account, but not when using another (admin) account.

  • In the Finder, when selecting OneDrive from the left hand side panel, I get `"OneDrive" encountered an unexpected error. Items may be out of date.' at the top of the Finder Window, with an option to "Try Again". In the content area, there is a spinning wheel with the word "Loading..." next to it.
  • On the command line, in a terminal, the command `ls' reports the following error "fts_read: Operation timed out"
    • cd ~/OneDrive\ -\ University\ of\ ***
    • ls
  • In the menu bar, OneDrive reports that "Your files are synched".
    • Changes made online are reported by the menu bar window.
  • In fact, I can see that the files are correctly synched in the cache:
    • ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.OneDriveStandaloneSuite/OneDrive - University of ***.noindex/OneDrive - University of ***
    • The size of the directory is 14 Mb with the following files:
      • total 29648 drwxrwxrwx 2 neo csistaff 64B 3 Aug 16:24 Hydrations/ drwx------@ 20 neo csistaff 640B 3 Aug 16:53 OneDrive - University of ***/ -rw-r--r-- 1 neo csistaff 13M 3 Aug 16:44 OneDrive - University of ***.dat -rw-r--r-- 1 neo csistaff 32K 3 Aug 16:44 OneDrive - University of ***.dat-shm -rw-r--r-- 1 neo csistaff 443K 3 Aug 16:53 OneDrive - University of ***.dat-wal drwxrwxrwx 2 neo csistaff 64B 3 Aug 16:24 Staging/

I tried the following in order to solve the problems.

  • I unlinked the account
  • I uninstalled and reinstalled the application
  • I ran /Applications/OneDrive.app/Contents/Resources/ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command
  • I uninstall GoogleDrive and in particular its Finder extension.
  • I confirmed that OneDrive's Finder extension is selected in the preferences
  • I attempted to do a `clean install':
    • unlinked the account
    • I ran /Applications/OneDrive.app/Contents/Resources/ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command
    • Followed by
      • sudo pkill -9 OneDrive sudo rm -rf /Applications/OneDrive.app/ sudo rm -rf /Library/Logs/Microsoft/OneDrive sudo rm /private/var/db/receipts/com.microsoft.OneDrive-mac.bom sudo rm /private/var/db/receipts/com.microsoft.OneDrive-mac.plist sudo rm /private/var/db/receipts/com.microsoft.OneDrive.bom sudo rm -rf /Users/neo/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.OneDrive-mac sudo rm -rf /Users/neo/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.OneDrive-mac.FinderSync sudo rm -rf /Users/neo/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.OneDrive.FinderSync sudo rm -rf /Users/neo/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.OneDriveLauncher sudo rm -rf /Users/neo/Library/WebKit/com.microsoft.OneDrive sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.OneDrive" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.OneDrive-mac" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.FinderSync" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.DownloadAndGo" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.OneDrive.FinderSync" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Scripts/com.microsoft.OneDriveLauncher" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Support/com.microsoft.OneDriveStandaloneUpdater" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Support/com.microsoft.OneDriveUpdater" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Support/OneDriveStandaloneUpdater" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Application Support/OneDriveUpdater" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.OfficeOneDriveSyncIntegration" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.OneDriveStandaloneSuite" sudo rm -rf "/Users/neo/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.OneDriveSyncClientSuite"

I repeated several of these steps after the release of each new version of OneDrive since February.

Environment:

macOS is up to date (12.5)

OneDrive is up to date, 22.141.0703.0002 (from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/onedrive-release-notes-845dcf18-f921-435e-bf28-4e24b95e5fc0?ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us#mac)

Conclusion:

Given that on the same computer the synchronization works perfectly when using another user suggests that the OS and OneDrive are not the issue. [Well, I believe that OneDrive should be able to detect a missing permission somewhere...]

For the record, I also have Dropbox running in my primary account. This is my default Cloud storage solution.

However, for my administrative roles, I have to use OneDrive for collaborations. Since February, I have been using the Web-based interface. However, this is quite tedious.

I repeatedly tried to solve the problem since February, a couple of hours here and there, but this has been very frustrating.

Any hint or help would be appreciated.

Marcel

    Hi there,

I managed to get it to work again, I hope it can work for you too.

    What I did:

    1. Uninstall OneDrive. If you can, use an app like App Cleaner & Uninstaller (https://nektony.com/mac-app-cleaner) to delete every file that OneDrive contains (doesn't have any effect in your files) and install it again, and setup your account.
    2. Keep the app opened.
    3. Restart your computer.
    4. Open finder and go to applications; OneDrive > Show content package > contents > resources > ResetOneDriveApp.command
    5. Once the process in the terminal is finished set up the app with your account again and see if it now shows as it should.

If these steps don't work, do it again but now before you restart your Mac do the step 3 first and then restar your Mac.

I'm providing you what worked for me because I did the step 3 (like you) without restarting the Mac and It would still show the error. What made the difference was to restart the Mac.

Unfortunately not. I have not solved the problem.

Out of options, I tried a client from a separate vendor. It's called ExpanDrive. It allows to mount OneDrive and SharePoint file systems on your computer. The file system part seems to work fine, but the User Interface is buggy and the support non-existant.

Temporarily, I am running Windows in VMWare Fusion for my administrative work.

If you find a workaround, please post the information here!

    Hi, Marcel

I'm having the same issue after reinstalling the OneDrive app. Did you get the problem solved? I would like to see if there was a solution that may help me solve that too

    Dear Marcel,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

According to your description, OneDrive shows error "OneDrive" encountered an unexpected error. Items may be out of date when you select OneDrive from left hand side panel in Finder. The situation only appears with your primary Mac user account, it works fine with another admin account.

We understand you have spent lots of time troubleshooting the issue. For the situation you encountered, we deeply understand the frustration and apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Appreciate you share with us the troubleshooting methods you have tried. Since you have tried uninstalling and reinstalling OneDrive app and other troubleshooting methods but the error persists, on one hand, considering on the same computer OneDrive synchronization works fine with another Mac user account, the primary user account might be corrupted, so we suggest you contact Apple Support and let them help to check the account.

On the other hand, you may use another user account as a temporarily workaround.

At the same time, we sincerely recommend you contact your Microsoft 365 administrator, follow steps in this article, create a support ticket in Microsoft 365 Admin Center and contact Online Support. The support team over there has higher permission than us, they can remotely help you do investigation in the affected Mac user account, collect logs when the error message appears and involve more resource to help you do further troubleshooting. This would be a more efficient way in handling this case for you.

For reference:  How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Hope you stay safe and healthy.
