I have sections (numbered identification) and sub-sections (lettered identification) using SEQ fields. Can these two bits of data be concatenated to form a chapter id in TOC and Index?

I have learned how to use a SEQ field to label non-sequential "chapters" for combining with page numbers in my book. Now I find a need to be able to also define and incorporate "sub-chapter" lettering as part of the chapter numbering.

A second SEQ field makes it very easy to generate the sub-chapter letters but, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to concatenate the two together. I cannot find any operator in my research that would allow such a thing in Word.

Please tell me there is a way to do this, and please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,

Chris Johnson

    Doug,

Maybe I am missing something, but even though TC fields can be very useful, they won't let you add additional numbering to the page numbers in the TOC, as far as I can tell.

Indeed, you can incorporate SEQ numbering with page numbers, as discussed in the article at http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/TOCTips.htm#ChapterNumbering but it can only be used with one numbering level, because SEQ fields are single-level in nature.

If you are able to use multilevel heading numbering, this is a bit more flexible. But the restart requirements discussed in the thread at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/non-consecutive-chapter-or-section-numbers/050f7a95-19a2-4242-9ce1-fe3c5338828f will cause trouble.

I wasn't sure at first, but I guess that this is in relation to our previous discussion on using SEQ fields with page numbers in a table of contents (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/non-consecutive-chapter-or-section-numbers/050f7a95-19a2-4242-9ce1-fe3c5338828f)?

You can use SEQ fields for "chapter numbers" that are included in a table of contents, but you can't add more than one level, because the SEQ field is sequential (the field can't be made to recognize more than a single level of numbering).

Please type a manual example of what you want your sequences and TOC to look like

I have used Heading styles to provide the basic formatting and TOC level information. So my Heading 1 is Yellow and Heading 2 is orange.

I put a page break before each heading 1 so you see the page numbers increasing in the TOC

Then I use the 2 sequences to do the major minor numbering

Here are what the field codes look like

You can use TC fields to add custom text to a TOC. Of course, using styles is the best solution, whenever possible. A style-based TOC will be a lot easier to maintain.

You can build a TC field (= table of contents entry field) using bookmarks that refer to numbered items, such as SEQ fields, if necessary.

Could you give a more detailed example of what you are trying to achieve?
