Can you change a product, Office Pro Plus 2019, that was installed as "Office Click to Run" to be Windows Installer technology (MSI) instead?

Yes, the first link is for the base "2007 compatibility Pack". If you can open the 4 letter extensions then yes it is installed. Good for you.

    .

The second link is for the most recent update to the compatibility pack. Since you already had the compatibility pack, Office update has probably already applied the SP3 update. If you want to double check, down load and run it. If it says you already have it, again great.

Yes, the old 3 letter file types are DOC, XLS, PPT

New 4 letter "x-file" types are DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and DOCM, XLSM, PPTM for macro enabled files

    .

If you are still using any files with the old 3 letter file types it is strongly recommended to convert them to the new 4 letter file types. Most of your files should be the non-macro "X" types.

    .

The point of the new file types is to only allow macros to be saved in the few files you need to contain them. Most of your files should be the X, non macro, type.

    .

    Happy computing.

    Hello XRaySpeX1

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook, and I’m happy to help you today.

There is no MSI version of Office 2019. In older versions where there is C2R and MSI, MSI were for volume licenses only.

Why do you think you need an MSI installer?

Office 2019 is click to run - you can have Outlook 2003 installed (its MSI) and Outlook 2019 since its C2R. But you can't use both at the same time.

For best results, you should do a repair before switching versions. That might solve the crashing.

Are both 32bit? It's recommended to use the same bitness but you can install mixed if you install Office 2003 after 2019. If you have mixed versions, try switching 2019 to 32bit.

Why does the user need 2003?

Following on from the latter point, why can't Office Pro 2019 offer an Add/Remove Features as Office Pro 2003 does?

Outlook has always been a problem child when trying to run more than one version on the same computer.

    .

Why is there no "add/remove feature" any more. Because in it's infinite wisdom, MS decided that it was "better" (well, for them, not us) that Office installations become an all or nothing process in the click to (not) run environment.

    .

That being said, there is an MS "secret", you can use the business tool called the "Deployment Tool" to do "custom" install of consumer Office.

    Office Deployment Tool

You still can do "custom" installs", explicitly including or excluding elements of the Office bundle using a Business oriented tool called the "Office Deployment Tool". It is intended for Business administrators, but it does secretly support consumer Office bundles. It's tricky, intended for experienced administrators, not users, so it requires learning some XML coding. Here are some links to the tool, you'll have to do more research to use it:

    .

Excluding Office apps typically saves between 200-500MB per app. Yes, that can be significant on the relatively small, 20-64GB SSDs, that were typically used on retail devices up to 2019-2020. On devices with larger SSDs it’s not worth the effort. Since Windoze now uses 27GB for it's installation and Office uses around 4-5GB, that doesn't leave space for anything else.

    Hi Diane,

On my PC 1 user needs to use Outlook 2003 & another needs Outlook 2019. We do know that that you can't run them at the same time but even when you run them separately they clash to some extent. After running Outlook 2019 & closing it then running up Outlook 2003 comes up with an unresponsive window which crashes out after a few secs. To fix this then requires that Outlook 2003 (just itself out of the whole Office Pro 2003 suite) be removed & then added.

Following on from the latter point, why can't Office Pro 2019 offer an Add/Remove Features as Office Pro 2003 does?
