Microsoft 365 companyname.onmicrosoft.com tenant custom domain already taken - get back ownership

We have to buy Microsoft 365 Business licences for some customers.

For our customers, we would like to use a 'companyname.onmicrosoft.com' custom domain structure (much more easier to remember than anything else), but, in some case, these Microsoft custom domains are already taken.

These already-used domains could have been created by us in the past, by the customers themselves or by unknown people.

We would like to get back the custom domains' ownership by recovering access to the admins' accounts, but we don't know or remember them.

The question is simple : how to identify the companyname.onmicrosoft.com admins without knowing or remembering them ?

Can Microsoft help on this?

If we don't do this, there is a also risk, if tenants have been created by people not belonging to our customers' companies, that scam/phishing emails could be sent using a ******@companyname.onmicrosoft.com email structure!

    Dear Mac,

Thank you for your fast reply and advice.

We just called the Microsoft support in Belgium.

We had the choice to have a conversation in Dutch or French, not English (even if support in English was supposed to be available).

We chose French and were probably rerouted to France.

Answer form the support: If your tenant domain is already taken, we cannot help you to get it back if you don't know the user and / or company that created it.

    Security is the excuse...

As there is a trademark infringement, we asked for a Microsoft email address to introduce a complain or get help.

Answer from the support: There is no email address for such a request. You cannot get it back.

These are the kind of interactions with the support teams that really makes us hesitate to transfer email services to Microsoft.

    Best regards,

    David
