Word Is Finishing Analysing Your Document : Collaboration Issues

Hi

Word quite often suddenly says "word is finishing analysing your document", the document freezes (and word as a whole freezes) for 5 minutes, and the "ESC to cancel" option fails (because the windows message queue is obviously blocked out).

This is an issue that appears a lot (when I look on Google), but with no technical answer I can find (just things like "untick keep track of formatting" - which don't work).

I have two cases where it is happening now.

Case 1 : Document Collaboration and Multi-Level Lists

I have a 10 page simple document (no track changes or comments), and no plug-ins.

Someone else is looking at the document at the same time as me.

I click on "define new multi-level list".

Everything freezes and it does into "analysis".

Case 2 : Macro Enabled Document With Context Menus

I have a macro enabled document with embedded custom context menus (created through VBA).

I right click to start a custom context menu.

Word works some times and sometimes goes into "analysis".

Help Me to Help Myself

Can anyone at Microsoft explain what is happening in this "analysis" so that I can learn what triggers it and avoid it?

Thank you

Julian

    Hi Julian,

Thanks for posting in the community.

For the case that you co-authored the document with your colleagues, may I know if your colleagues can still edit the document when the issue happened on your side? If it works well on your colleagues’ sides, the issue seems caused by the local environment.

For this message, I am afraid I haven’t found a definitive answer from the official documentation. Based on my search, some users mentioned the issue is caused by the add-ins/macros or easily appears in the large size documents. If you can reproduce the issue in a local document, please try to set Word into Safe Mode, then test again, check whether the issue still exists. Close Word, press win + R, in the Run box, type winword /safe, and click OK and reopen the document to test. If the issue exists in an online document, please try to disable the add-ins before opening the online document, then check again.

Also, you can try to set Windows into Clean Boot and check whether the issue is caused by the startup items.

If the issue still exists, please provide your Office version. Click File> Account, please provide a screenshot including Subscription Product and About Word.

    Regards,

    George

    Hi.

    Yes, that is right.

First the fan goes very high (which is a sign), then all of the word windows stop responding and grey out, and then eventually (if I am patient) the task bar has the analysing message (with a very very slow progress bar) and an ESC option (which never works - very confusing for a user).

I then go and make a coffee, and it is usually responsive when I come back.

I get this at least 5 times a day - clearly some operations in word trigger whatever this "analysis" is doing, and then the "analysis" gets stuck (or very slow) somewhere - probably lost in the depths of the C++ code.

The accessing of the multi-level list was a new one to me : there must be something special about my document or its formatting that is messing up the "analysis" feature - but who knows what.

To put my experience in context, I love Word generally, and write enormous amounts of Macros to automate Word and Excel. So I have a pretty deep knowledge.

This problem has always eluded me.

    Julian

PS, I have about 15 tables in the multi-level list document. Can't guess if that is part of the problem.

PPS, without knowing what this analysis is doing, it is really difficult to solve / avoid.

Where are you seeing the "Word is finishing analysing your document" message? On the status bar in Word?

Do you only see the "analysing" message for a document in which you are collaborating with other people?
