How can I stop Word 365 from saving a document in compatibility mode?

I'm trying to stop Word from saving a document in "compatibility mode." The Help instructions say to use the File menu to save a copy but no such option is available. Compatibility mode is really screwing up the placement of some inserted lines and boxes.

Thanks.

Which version of Office are you running? You have posted your question in the Word for Windows category; if that is correct, you should definitely see File > Save As:

At File > Save As, click the Browse option to display the Save As dialog box:

Choose "Word Document" for file type and clear the check box next to "Maintain compatibility with previous versions of Word."

If you create a new, blank document and save it, using Word's defaults, you should get a document which is NOT in compatibility mode, assuming that all settings are correct.

You can exit Word and rename the Normal template, if you believe that something could be wrong with the template. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/word/issues-when-start-or-use-word#option5.

Note that if even new documents become saved in compatibility mode, make sure that "Word Document" is selected for "Save files in this format" at File > Options > Save.

In addition, make sure that your Normal template is updated to the most recent file format.

    Hi RossLampert,

I’m Sharon one of the Independent Advisor and I’d be happy to help you out with your question.

    Word
Note: The Compatibility Report checks for compatibility issues with Office 98 for Mac through Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 and with Windows versions from Office 97 through Microsoft Office 2010.

On the Word menu, click Preferences.

Under Output and Sharing, click Compatibility Word Compatibility Preferences button.

Under Compatibility Report, clear the Check documents for compatibility check box.

Tip: To check the compatibility of a document after you have turned off the Compatibility Report, on the View menu, click Compatibility Report.
