I have documents with a Document Number and a Version Number as official tracking numbers. I would like those numbers to display in the footer and be updated in the footer when they change. Is there a way to do that?

Read https://gregmaxey.com/word_tip_pages/repeating_data.html for many ways to repeat information within a document.

For just two numbers -- or a few pieces of data -- the easiest way is the "Built-in Core/Extended/Cover Page Property Content Controls" method in section 7 of that article -- simply repurpose the built-in controls to be labeled as you want them.

Sure, in the footer, insert the appropriate field codes: (Word 2013) >Insert tab > Text group > Quick Parts drop down > Field ... command

    .

    Version is "RevNum" field code

What is a "Document Number"? Where is it found?

My understanding of RevNum is that it updates on save. What I'm looking for is a way to save corporate provided content from other manufacturing systems: Document Number and Rev Number of Document. I'm not looking for them to change unless manually changed, but I want them displayed in footers and updated in footers if the number changes at the beginning of the document.
