in iOS: Jumping BUG in New Documents in Word when on Mobile View - what’s going on?

Hi all,

Hoping someone, anyone can shed light on this situation because I’m about to go absolutely barking mad. I’ve already spoken with tech support, so at this point, I’m hoping that fellow users might be able to provide insight.

I have chronic migraines and use Mobile View when editing documents on my iOS devices for accessibility reasons. My issue with Mobile View in Office on my iOS devices as described below is making it all but impossible to use.

Background: I use Office (and the applications within) and have a Microsoft 365 account for Business Standard. I run Office on a laptop PC, Android phone, iPhone 13, and iPad 8. All are up-to-date. I have been using Microsoft and Office for the PC and otherwise for what feels like forever and this is the first time I have ever encountered this issue.

Buggy Issue: About 3 to 4 weeks ago, I started noticing that New Documents created in Office - either through the desktop program or on a mobile device - have an issue where the screen jumps up when editing in Mobile View on iOS devices.

This only affects New Documents; all of my older documents created before 3 to 4 weeks ago are fine and unaffected. My workaround so far has thus been to create new documents based off an old document.

Troubleshooting: I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled my apps. I’ve logged in and logged out. It doesn’t matter if I use my Business or Personal Account. I’ve created New Documents on my desktop program and the issue didn’t go away when I opened it on iOS. I’ve created New Documents on Office online and the issue didn’t go away when I opened it on iOS. My only conclusion at this point is that for whatever reason, a recent update to Office - iOS app or otherwise - is causing this issue.

Troubleshooting Note: I have no idea if this might be relevant or not, but when creating a New Document in Office online (on the web) and on my Android phone, the default document automatically creates spacing either before or after an assumed paragraph. On iOS, it doesn’t do this. The default is single space with no extra spacing before or after an assumed paragraph.

How to Replicate - New Document in iOS Office App - iPad 8 (default on-screen keyboard):

  1. Create a new Blank Document in Word which automatically opens in Print View. Tap screen to call up the default keyboard and type a word, sentence, whatever. Swap to Mobile View. Watch whatever you typed disappear up the screen. Dismiss the keyboard / exit editing mode and watch the screen jump back down to show whatever you typed.
  2. Create a new Blank Document in Word which automatically opens in Print View. Don’t type anything. Immediately switch to Mobile View. Tap screen to call the default on-screen keyboard and watch as there’s no cursor because it has jumped up the screen. Type something and watch as nothing shows up because it’s typing where you can’t see it. Dismiss the keyboard and watch the screen jump down and show what you typed.

How to Replicate - New Document in Desktop Office and Word Program and Editing in iOS Office App - iPad 8 (default on-screen keyboard):

  1. Create a new Blank Document in Word. Type something. Save to OneDrive or however you wish to port it over to the iOS device for editing in the iOS app. Open that Blank Document in iOS app for editing. Observe same behavior as described above.

How to Replicate - New Document in iOS Office App - iPhone 13 (default on-screen keyboard):

  1. Create a new Blank Document in Word which automatically opens in Mobile View. Tap screen to call up the default on-screen keyboard. Type something. Dismiss the keyboard. Watch the screen jump up.

    Hi Team,

I have finally solved this issue on my own.

TLDR; Basically, on both my iPad and iPhone, I had to open and fully log out (business and personal accounts) of ALL of the Microsoft apps (Office, OneDrive, Teams, Tasks, OneNote), delete ALL of the Microsoft apps, reboot my devices, reinstall the apps, and re-log into each app using my business account only.

Emphasis: The key here is that EVERY SINGLE Microsoft APP had to be logged out of and deleted, devices restarted, and apps reinstalled and logged back into - and in that exact order - before the issue would fix. Not just Office, not just OneDrive, but everything related to Microsoft.

Upon reinstalling and logging in and authenticating successfully, the issues not only went away, but some of the apps also unexpectedly changed in UI appearance.

Note: Up until this point, I was positive that my apps - specifically, Office and OneDrive - were correctly updated because I had already logged out, uninstalled, and reinstalled multiple times from Apple’s App Store… but apparently, I was wrong.

While I’m not certain about what happened to create my app problems, I suspect that there was a conflict related to my level of account access (business or personal; I have both) which was triggered when I renewed my Microsoft 365 Standard Business license renewal during the most recent Microsoft iOS app updates.

I have both a much older personal Microsoft account which is tied to my Surface Pro 3 and its associated older perpetual Microsoft and Office license and a much newer business Microsoft 365 Standard license.

On all of my Microsoft apps on my iOS devices (except for Teams), I had logged into them first at some point using my older personal account before logging in later with my business account.

Though this had never produced any problems for me before, after I realized that my problems started happening around the time I had renewed my business license combined with the app updates, I decided to delete everything Microsoft-related on my iOS devices and get a fresh start….

… Which, on iOS, is more involved than it looks.

Because of how iOS likes to save app settings (even after deletion) and because Microsoft apps handshake with each other, I ultimately had to log out of ALL of my Microsoft apps (a lot of apps, in some cases both business and personal accounts) FIRST before deleting them ALL in order to not only get a “clean” app install but also a “clean” account log-in…

Which is what I apparently needed to fix my problem on both devices.

    Well.

That solution was short-lived and has reappeared again.

This time, there was no personal Microsoft account to (potentially) get in the way and this time, I can definitely attribute this bug to the newest update.

My documents were fine and then the updates happened and once again, the issue popped up with newer documents.

    Again.

    So. Incredibly. Frustrating.

    Will troubleshoot further.

    Hello Aithan T.

Sorry for all the troubles you had to go through and thank you for sharing updates with us.

As I understand clear reinstall of Office applications and removing the Microsoft credentials from iOS devices has helped to fix the issue.

For the convenience of our community members I will mark your post as an answer.

    Best Regards,

    Igor

    Hello Aithan T.

Sorry for the troubles caused by this issue and thank you for the detailed description.

I have followed the instruction in your post but I’m afraid I can’t reproduce the same issue on Word version 2.60 (22040400) and iOS 15.4.1.

As you have mentioned the issue applies only to new documents on different iOS devices, may I know if your organization manages Office apps with Microsoft Intune? For your reference Manage Office for iOS and Android with Intune | Microsoft Docs

You may need to confirm this information with administrator in your organization. How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Office Support.

You may also try to reset Word application and Microsoft account on your device and check the results. Reset Microsoft Account from iPhone (Remove & Add Account) - Microsoft Community

Feel free to share any updates with us.

    Best Regards,

    Igor
