After renaming the Title field in a Microsoft list a few times, I've somehow managed to have 2 duplicate fields. See screen capture.

    Dear Hunter,

Thanks for your updates and your videos and I have checked the video you provided here again.

In your environment, the primary Title column is TitleParent?. The other two columns Title (Link to items with edit menu) and Title (Link to items) are linked to TitleParent?. So if you change the name of TitleParent?, the names of the two columns will also be changed to TitleParent?. The values of the two columns are changed based on the values of TitleParent? as well. The two columns are created by SharePoint Online by default and can't be deleted and can only be hiden. They are shown in the classic Edit Column UI and will not be shown in the modern Edit Column UI.

By defalt, SharePoint Online hides the primary Title column which is a single-line text column and show the Title (Link to items with edit menu) column linked to the primary column in the list after you create a new list. But the primary column is showed in the list edit form for you to add values on Title.

So you just need to rename TitleParent? to Title in your list and only leave Title (Link to items with edit menu) in the classic Edit Column UI to see if the issue can be fixed in your environment.

Thanks for your effort and time.

    Cliff

Thanks for the response. I approve the link being visible.

I didn't (knowingly) create read-only/hidden in classic view. I never left modern view. I was only trying to re-purpose the "primary" (linked, non-deletable) column, thus I renamed it and copied data from it to another column, then copied the preferred data from yet another column back to the primary column again.

Here is a screenshot of the columns in "Edit View" menu:

How can I delete (not just hide) these duplicate columns? And how can I determine the real "primary"? I assume it's the one that overwrites the others when modified (TitleParent?) in screenshot, but it is NOT "linked to item" in the modern view (not clickable).

And how did you so easily create duplicate named columns? I can't in modern view. Is this only possible in classic view?

I also can't filter on Title1 or Title 2 in classic view, only in modern view

    Dear Hunter,

Thanks for providing the link and the video here for us to confirm the situation in your environment.

As the forum is public, I'd like you to check whether the link and the video in the link can be shared here directly. If yes, please add your confirmation and I'll remove the link to protect your privacy if there is no confirmation from you.

About the issue, I think that the root cause may be that you add other two read-only and hidden Title columns in the classic SharePoint experience of the list.

I suggest you click on Return to classic SharePoint>List>Modify View>uncheck two other Title columns and then return to the modern view of the list in SharePoint Online to see the result.

    Best Regards,

    Cliff
