Which updates do I need from the update catalog for Office 2007?

I have it freshly installed from disc, I would like the bare minimum updates needed.

I do not use it online.

I use it locally for Excell and Word only.

For instance, I don't want to download Service Pack 1 and 2 if all I need is Service Pack 3.

Also, since I don't use it online, do I need Server updates?

...and which security updates do I really need?

Not 'upgrading' to 365 so not sure I need 'Compatibility' updates....

I basically want the latest offline features possible from all those years ago, LOL.

I would highly recommend that you turn off the automatic Office updates. I would guess that with the updates for Office 2007 removed by MSFT that you are likely to corrupt the programs by trying to find the patches.

I would see if you can find, download and save the Office SP and then install them manually. You might have problems finding the service patches for old versions of Office. Once support is discontinued years ago and as time goes on MSFT tends to remove the service patches.

Many will argue that because Office 2007 is out of service that you must 'upgrade' to a newer version. I am of the old school that tend to believe that if it ain't broke then don't fix it. I use lots of legacy software and prefer it to the new web-centric versions.

I run 5 versions of Publisher.. I installed SP2 to Pub 2007 which if memory serves also contains the 'fix' that allows me to open newer file versions Publisher. I don't remember why I chose to not install the Office 2007 SP3, but you should be fine installing it. SP3 does include SP1 and SP2. Here is a description: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/description-of-the-2007-office-suite-sp3-and-of-office-language-pack-2007-sp3-6b035e99-1619-a3c6-427d-fe202b5eda27

Most of these old SPs can still be found in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Here is what seems to be the link to the SP3 for Office 2007. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=2526086

If it runs ok without the SP installed, then in my view; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you, so if I download SP3 I should have the most recent offline features? I don't think I need the security updates since I don't use it online and save files locally.

The Service Patches are all the accumulated patches, security, program updates, etc. including the previous patches. There is no efficient way...actually no way that I know of to sort out patches just for Offline features for Office 2007.

What I liked about the service patches was the individual patches that were included had been 'de-bugged' for the most part. Any conflicts or problems they caused when they were first introduced as individual patches had been worked out before they were included in the Service Patch. While there was some risk, I felt reassured that if I skipped the individual patches and waited for and installed the Service Patch, it was not going to break something in an effort to fix something else...like so many of the mandatory patches of today's MSFT world.

It has been my observation that the majority of Publisher users that post problems these days, find that one of the mandatory Windows updates is what broke Publisher. I wish we had the option of Service Patches and could turn off the individual mandatory Windows patches. Others, including MSFT, disagree.

Again, I chose to only install Office 2007 SP2 for some reason, but I am only running Pub 2007 and not the rest of Office 2007. If I were running Word and Excel 2007, I think I would go ahead and install SP3 for Office 2007. I doubt if it will cause as many problems as you are likely to get with your mandatory Windows patches. At the minimum I would download and save all three of the SP for Office 2007. At some point you will not be able to get them and you may have to reinstall Office 2007 periodically as the only way to fix a problem caused by a Windows patch.

    Hello JohnIreland,

Thank you for posting your question in our community, since you do not want to upgrade to Office 365 I will suggest you continue using it the way it is as it should run properly since you are not using it online.

    Best Regards, Asher
