How do I move archived emails from Virgin Media to Outlook?

I have Outlook as my email client on my desktop and laptop. Virgin Media is my default email service and I have a VM email address. I have many archive folders (and sub folders) that I have created in Outlook (which in turn sync to the VM webmail application) to which I move important emails that I have either sent or received. These presumably are retained on the VM servers and do not store on the local drive.

I also have a Microsoft (MS) Office account and an Outlook.com email address and would like to move all my VM archived folders to my Outlook account so that I have duplicated my VM archives on the Outlook mail client and can store them on the MS servers instead.

Is this possible? Will it move all email messages from the VM server to the MS server so that I am not reliant on VM to retrieve emails that have been archived over many years?

How do I do this please?

Hello, I'm Diane, an M365 Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook.

Both VM and Outlook email accounts are IMAP and are set up in the Outlook mail client. <<

Is the Outlook.com account added as IMAP or exchange? Check in File > Account Settings > Account Settings > email tab.

If you are moving mail into the outlook.com account, you should use Exchange account type - IMAP doesn't always sync everything up.

As a backup, I would export the VM account to a pst file - file > Open & Export > Import and Export > Export to a file > choose PST. This will be insurance if you can't find a message in outlook.com. But before you do this, check in File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Double click on the account and make sure the sync slider is set to all. Otherwise, you will only export what is in outlook. (The same applies to moving mail to outlook on the web.)

Also, when you export IMAP accounts to pst files, the folders will appear empty - change the view on the folder to see the mail.

Depends as to how your VM mail account is setup on the local PC, as an IMAP or pop mail account?

If pop and you are using Office 365/MS Outlook then that VM data is available on the local PC or within MS Outlook - there is nothing for you to change/do

If you have moved/copied data to the MS Outlook folder set and they are all visible there simply in MS Outlook remove that VM mail account.

If you are staying with VM for broadband/TV simply in VM web access mail setting set up a mail forward to your oulook.com mail account. That way you wont miss anything

    Hi

Both VM and Outlook email accounts are IMAP and are set up in the Outlook mail client. In each email account, I have a series of archive folders and sub-folders under the inbox and sent box etc folders.

I have created two test folders in the VM account on Outlook mail client and have populated them with a few old unimportant emails. I have right clicked on them and have moved one and copied the other to the Outlook account. The one that I have moved from VM has disappeared on VM and the one that I copied is retained on VM.

Both are now in the Outlook folder structure, and I can download and read content, so I am assuming that this is the solution.

However, does this mean that the folder and their emails are now on the MS server and, if I cancel my VM service, I can still access them from MS?

    Thanks
