Lost content on word doc on OneDrive

I was working on a Word Document on OneDrive and I closed it (it saves automatically) and then when I reopened it an hour later there was no content in the document but it said the file size is 17.8KB. Not sure if it didn’t save properly or there’s something wrong?

Thanks!

Thomas

    Hello ,

Greetings for the day! I’m an, Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you and I'm glad to provide you information regarding your scenario.

Could you please sign into OneDrive cloud and verify whether the saved document exist in cloud? Sign in to OneDrive on your browser with your Microsoft personal account and check if you can see the missing files. You can always download from secure folder. - https://onedrive.live.com/

Also verify the recycle bin in OneDrive to see if any of you're missing files do exist. https://support.microsoft.com/office/949ada80-0026-4db3-a953-c99083e6a84f

    1. In the navigation pane, select Recycle bin.
    2. Select the files or folders you want to restore by pointing to each item and clicking the circle check box that appears, and then click Restore.
    3. To restore files from your Recycle Bin in Windows, open the Recycle Bin, select the files or folders you want to recover, then right-click them and select Restore. The file or folder will be restored to its original folder.

Also this issue happens if the word file had any issue while saving the details in OneDrive. Please find below link to open the word file from recent changes. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/why-did-onedrive-not-save-my-word-document/9c4fa1cd-12eb-4768-8f8e-36957dd4da21

To recover such files, you need to go to File>Info>Manage Document and then select "Recover Unsaved Documents."

Hope this information would be useful to you. Please feel free to get back if you need any additional info.

    Hey Thomas,

Thanks for the update. Could you please try to download the Word file from the version history?

Step 1: Clear the temporary and cache files. Go to temp location and clear all the files. To clear temporary files, Press Windows key + R to open the Run command. Then type “temp” in the search field and press OK. C:\Windows\Temp OR %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

Step 2: 1.Right click on the file that you wish to edit. 2. From the drop-down menu. Click on “Version history”. This will open the Version history pane on the right-hand side of your screen. 3. Click on a version to display your options. 4. The three options are displayed are Restore, Open File, or Delete Version. 5. Restore makes this version the current live version of the document

    Hi Ravi,

Thanks a million for the reply.

The document itself is in the OneDrive cloud, but it has no content. In the cloud, it says beside it that the file is 17.7 KB in size, but I don't understand how it is if there is no content in it when I click into it. If it said '0 KB/MB' or something very small, I would just assume it did not save properly at all and would restart my assignment.

Also, I checked in the recycle bin, but that is empty and version history is giving me a version from earlier that has no content either.

    Thanks

    Thomas
