I suddenly have to re-add the same words to Word dictionary

I have been adding words to the Word dictionary and have had no problem until this week. Now the words I already added previously are showing up with a red line under them and I have to re-add them. Once added, they look fine until the next day when they are in red again. This problem is recent, perhaps due to the most recent update of version 2210, October 27? I read the release notes but there is nothing mentioned about any dictionary-related updates. I have Microsoft 365. Any help would be appreciated.

Select all the text and then (re-)apply the correct language via the Language dialog box (Review tab > Language group > Language > Set Proofing Language). In the dialog box, also disable the "Detect language automatically" option, if it is currently selected.

I also recommend that you modify the language of the Normal style (because it is the "parent," or based-on style, for many other paragraph styles in Word).

I understand. It may seem as though a different language has been applied to the text even though English is your default language. This is actually visible on the status bar, which indicates that the language at the insertion point is French. Use Ctrl+A to select all the text, then use the language button on the status bar to apply English in the Language dialog.

    Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. My document proofing language is set at "English (United States)" as it has always been. "Detect language automatically" is always checked. The words I've been adding to the dictionary are made up names. My other documents don't have any made up names and the proofing language settings are the same as the document I am currently working on. This problem of needing to re-add them to the dictionary only started two or three days ago.

    Regards,

    Thelwells

Hi. Thank you for your question and reaching out. My name is John and I’d be more than happy to help you with your query.

It's possible that your material is being proofed in a language other than English. The status bar makes this clear.

You might have pasted some text or instructed Word to choose the language for you. Choose the text. To switch the status bar to English, click on it.

Language proofing is not a computer setting. It is not a setting in Word. It is not a setting for a document. Not even a paragraph setting exists here! The setting is character-level.

Write back so that we can fix it if this is occurring with some of your documents or with all of them.

Please don't hesitate to post back for further questions. Best regards, John
