Why do equations in Word increasingly slow down the system, until it freezes? Hardware issue?

I write equations in my Word documents with the equation editor. As long I write only a few formulas, it works fine. But once the number of equations increases, say from five eq. upwards, the processor time of the Word application increases exponentially, the PC fan begins to run, the power usage in the task manager scales up to "very high", and everything slows down. This goes so far that the application almost freezes, and it becomes impossible to write.

Can anybody explain what is going on and how one could fix this problem?

PS: It works on my laptop, but not on my pc. Seems that the hardware is responsible. Perhaps the graphics card? Can it be a matter of hardware, such as the Graphic card, or some setting?

    Hi Tim,

I did. What then? It doesn't change much. Also in safe mode, Word slows down, and finally almost freezes.

Ok, I did this update. But it didn't fix the issue.

If I open my Word docx with several equations, everything slows down, sometimes it even freezes for about 30 seconds, Almost impossible to work in such conditions. Even if I only type a character, one can see with the task manager that it takes up to 25% of the CPU, and the energy consumption is labeled as "very high" (fan keeps running.)

If you wish to see the Word file here is a download link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wy_AeRey0bRNlTpyg8q2Wsecak9Q4cwn/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=113123323612486492807&rtpof=true&sd=true

But I think it depends on the OS and/or the hardware. Because on my laptop under Win11 I don't have this issue.

The question also is why my PC with Win 10 has never asked to update to Win 11? Should I? I guess so.... but the system never asked me if I would like to do so, which is strange. Perhaps there are good reasons to keep Win 10?

    My PC is an

    Hi Marco_6544

I’m Gunasekar and I will be happy to help you out with your question.

After going through the issue description and the possible methods you have tried you can try a repair upgrade method for your PC and check if it helps.

It will repair the damaged files, restore the lost files of the operating system, and update your drivers to the latest version without affecting your personal files or apps.

This method will fix if you have any issues with the operating system.

    Here are the steps:-

In-place upgrade method: Here is the link to Download Windows 10 media creation tool: Note: Scroll down and select the "Download tool now" option.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

Step1: Download the tool and run the Media creation tool.

Step2: Agree to the Microsoft terms and proceed with the basic installation steps.

Step3: 'On what do you want to do page'? Select the option Create installation media for another PC.

Step4: 'Select language, Architecture, and edition' Check the 'Use the recommended option' for this PC.

Step5: Choose which media to use page, and select 'ISO file'.

Step6: Select the folder in which you want to save the iso file. For e.g. you can save the file to the downloads folder as 'Windows.iso' without quotes.

Once the download is complete, click finish in the tool. Go to the downloads folder and double-click the ISO file and double-click the setup(Application) to begin the installation.
