Code 128 not printing scannable barcodes

I am running an excel sheet with code 128 as the font in column B. These barcodes display properly but you can't actually scan then with a scanner. I know the scanners will read code 128. Is there some additional step to get code 128 to function?

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem with barcodes. They simply don't scan when they are generated. They also look completely different than the actual Code 128 ones generated online from any other website. There is really something wrong with the code generator in Excel. Somebody just made a programming mistake! It's not possible that any website coding with Code 128 is scannable instantly and the ones from Excel are not. In fact none other code chosen from Excel is working and I got a scanner that scans most of the codes and it scans them instantly from the internet generators.

Codes look completely different in Excel while on the websites they look exactly the same!

    I use Microsoft 365

Online barcodes do work and I have tried a variety of scanners. I know they will scan code 128. There is something wrong with the barcodes as they are being generated. I have been manually printing them from an online source but I really need to get a system in that will automate the barcdoe generation, hence my trying to use excel. I appreciate your time trouble shooting this, I don't know what the issue could be.

    Dear Jolley,

    Welcome to the forum here.

Generally, you can follow the steps below to scan the barcode with Code 128.

    1. Turn off the computer and plug in the scanner on the exact port on the computer.
    2. Turn on the computer and the scanner.
    3. Open the Excel file and go to the scan area.
    4. Place the scanner about 6 inches away from the barcode and adjust the distance to see if the barcode can be scanned.
    5. Scan the barcode with the scanner.

As you encounter the issue when you scan the barcode with a scanner and the generated barcode works well in your environment, the issue may be related to the scanner you are using as well.

If it is convenient, I's like you to try an online barcode or other code such as Code 39 to see if you can work it out in your environment.

If you can work with another scanner and the barcode can be scanned fine, I suggest you contact the scanner support to see if there are some compatibility issues with Excel there.

Thanks for your effort and time.

    Sincerely,

    Cliff | Microsoft Community Moderator
