Word for Mac: Footer Link to Previous option box disappeared

Word for Mac: the blue "Link to Previous" field box in the footer has disappeared in some doc sections, so I have no way of using that command. How do I restore the actual field box itself (NOT the footer, which is still there)?

Thank you, Bob. I spent all afternoon on the phone with a very helpful MS rep; she was unable to resolve the issue (she even had me reinstall Word), but finally determined after much experimentation that the file in question is corrupt. (I'm a book editor and keep my Word program up to date; the file was pasted from an ancient version of Word that the author continues to use. Bummer, but at least the problem was finally isolated.) Thank you for your reply.

I'm not sure I understand the problem, but the actual command is in the Navigation group on the Header & Footer tab of the Ribbon. The Same as Previous label which appears at the right end of the Footer margin bar is simply an indicator. If it doesn't appear it means that the Footer for that Section is not linked to the previous Footer.

The Link to Previous tool on the Review tab also indicates whether a Footer or header is linked to the previous one.
