excel online how to find the name manager

Hello,

I am trying to display the name of workbook tabs on a sheet.

This tutorial shows a method of doing it, but I cannot make it work with excel online.

https://www.howtoexcel.org/how-to-generate-a-list-of-sheet-names-from-a-workbook-without-vba/

Is this the best way to list the workbook sheetnames?

This tutorial shows how to find the defined name manager in Office 365, but it isn't showing on my menu.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/define-and-use-names-in-formulas-4d0f13ac-53b7-422e-afd2-abd7ff379c64

Where is the name manager?

Thanks!

    Hi Cliff,

Thank you for helping with this. I think this post should be split to another support request as this part of the question isn't the same as the question title.

I am still struggling with the Power Automate. I have made an manual flow. There are so many settings to choose the location I had to set up a test file on the ' SharePoint Site - All Company' as individual accounts don't seem to file the relevant folders. It now runs successfully but it doesn't list the worksheet names, just add a new row to the table. So I obviously have some of the settings set up wrong. I shall have to explore this more when I have time.

    Thank you.

Thanks all, your efforts are much appreciated.

I found the Advanced formula environment, is a Microsoft Garage project add-on and have installed it from Micosoft.com

    https://appsource.microsoft.com/en-us/product/office/WA200003696

I need some time to explore how to use this for our needs.

Being able to work within Excel online and have the same formula work if the excel file is downloaded would be the best option.

    Dear Riverrunsthroughit,

Thanks for your updates and letting us know the current situation in your environment.

As you have access to Power Automate, you can click on My flows>Instant cloud flow>Manually trigger a flow>search Get worksheets to get all sheets in the workbook you stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online. You may first create a sheet with a table to store the sheet name like the following and create the flow as what I mentioned above.

As you want to just stay in Excel for the web, you may create the links to the worksheets one by one manually by the Hyperlink feature as the name manager formula mentioned in the provided article isn't supported in Excel for the web directly.

You can first let the flow I mentioned above to automatically paste the link text and then copy and paste the text to create the links quicker.

The Advanced Formula Environment option Riny mentioned is an add-in in Excel for the web. If you can install it in your environment, you can also give it a try in your environment.

@Riny, thanks for sharing the suggestions here.

As our product developers are willing to hear users' feedback and are continuing to bring more features to Excel for the web. I kindly suggest you submit your feedback on the Feedback platformto our product developers so that they can know your requirements and ideas for product improvements.

Thanks for your understanding and have a nice day!

    Sincerely,

I believe your first question has been addressed.

Although Excel for the Web doesn't have a Name Manager, you can use the Advance Formula Environment to name ranges and formulas.

On the Formulas ribbon, select this button

    Image

On the side-window that opens, select the Names tab and then Ranges

    Image

Press the plus sign and enter a name and definition. Press Done.

To enter a named formula select Formulas in stead of Ranges.

    As an example:

    Image Image

Now you can use the named formula referencing the named range. All done in Excel for the Web, without Name Manager.

Open the workbook in the desktop version and you'll see it all in the Name Manager.

    Hi Cliff,

    Thanks for the reply.

I couldn't find how to 'manually trigger a flow' in excel. I searched online and found it is Power Automate. Inside Power Automate I can see 'my flows' and 'create' in the left hand sidebar. But I can't see how to 'manually trigger a flow' as your tutorial suggests. I have created a new flow and tried to follow your steps. It is a very long winded method to be honest.

Anyway, after replicating the flow, the result comes up as

The power flow's logic app flow template was invalid. Unable to process template language expressions for action 'Apply_to_each' at line '1' and column '1053': Expected an expression, but found string literal 'value' instead.

I think I shall have to give up, I really don't want to learn a new program code just to manage our excel worksheets.

    Thanks.
